Well, you need the DNA sampling line more than the cloning line.... You get different skins with cloning but without good DNA or ability to sample higher level creatures, you won't end up with much.

Without BE xxx4 for experimentation (you might get away with less) and BE xx4x for sampling you dont need to bother crafting pets. If you really only have enough skill points for one line, do the xxx4 line and craft Stims / Enhancers.
