Hi all, I'm a semi-bored player looking for new professions to join and Bio Engineer has be pretty curious...

I like the idea of getting out and sampling creatures and all that good stuff, and I'm not necessarially getting into it to make a ton of cash.. I just want something to get into that will be fun for a while.

I suppose I'm asking... is Bio Engineer fun? Especially on the lower levels? (I realize nothing's THAT fun on the low levels, but I sure aint' gonna master it anytime soon)

thanks all

I started BE about 2 weeks ago, and Ive had alot of fun with it. The sampling part of it is alot of work. At only novice you wont be able to sample many decent beasts. Once you get lvl 1 it gets a little better, and at lvl 2, it realy starts getting interesting. At lvl 3 (where I am atm), there are few creatures you cant sample (Im sure many will disagree with me on that one ).

Getting meat for creatures isnt much of a problem, but getting meat for grinding XP is. Because of that, and since you dont get much XP for making creatures, Im only 1-0-3-1 atm.

All in all its a fun profession. Just be warned that it is skill point intensive. BE alone isnt that bad, but you will no doubt need mask scent, the more the better, to sample from creatures. And you will need artisan for surveying, and if you want a vendor you will need atleast buisness 3. So you may have to give up alot of skills.

'Fun' is a totally subjective word, but I'm guessing that since you are currently a Master Artisan as per your sig that you will find BE loads of fun. The DNA tree will be a bear for you at lower levels as your failure rate will make you scream, though it will improve a good deal once you get halfway through it. The tissue line is pretty dull as you're just making sub-components for components for other classes, but they are big money makers should you have help in meat collecting. Clone making is a blast - the intricate clone process makes forhuge possibilities, and the randomness factor in there can be frustrating but keeps you on your mental toes. Unlike some professions, a BE hasdesirable productsno matter what skill level they are at so you know you'll always have a market out there for some group... this (and the fact that roleplaying a mad scientist is fun as hell ) allows for slow progression of BE to not be a bad thing at all. You should have fun!

At some point, in order to master it, you have to grind boatloads and boatloads of Micronutrient Supplements, so no, that part isn't fun. However, I did find the lower levels fun (am 3-2-3-3 now), getting the hang of the whole cloning process. My DNA samples were low quality, and I couldn't experiment much, but it was still really interesting trying DNA templates with various combinations of creature DNA that I'd collected. I think the endless permutations of creature DNA we get to try out are really a big advantage (in terms of tinkering fun) over other crafting professions, who don't have the option of trying deciduous wood where steel normally goes, just to see what the heck comes out.

Well, I have been a BE for a long time now. I have greatly enjoyed my experience in the profession so far. I can tell you that at the lower levels , No it is not fun. Sampling is a grind you will want to complete as fast as possible. Be prepared to fail roughly 70% of the time in the beginning until you get to sampling 4. The crafting portion will not be too bad as long as you can get your hands on enough meat. Once you get to Master you will have loads of fun. The pet market is very small now. Even so, making BE animals can be very rewarding. Just make sure you expand your crafting to include all aspects of the BE profession ( supplements, tissues, stims, pets). Many BEs I have talked to seem to lock themselves in to one area or another and fast burn out.
