Several professions were recently revamped to prevent the loss of expensive or difficult-to-obtain components on a critical failure. Raw materials are lost, but a completed sub-assembly or similar component is not destroyed in the failure, and is returned to the crafter in inventory.
I would like to submit that the DNA template is our analogous component to a manufactured sub-assembly. We already suffer the potential loss of hours of effort in a combine to form the template itself; it seems unduly harsh to lose the template in a final combine over which we have negligible control, especially in the case of multi-generational combines.
Critical failures in creating the template itself; painful but understandable. Crit fails with the resulting loss of hours of work in aquiring and mixing DNA, experimentation, possibly re-sampling and re-mixing through 2, 3 or even more generations; simply a crapshoot with no reasonable hope of our being able in any way to influence the outcome.
I think this is a reasonable request to submit to the developers; it does not overwhelmingly increase our abilities or strength, nor does it give us anything which has not previously been granted to other crafting classes. A critical failure on the pet combine should not destroy the DNA template, the same as a crit fail on a guild hall does not destroy the 6 identical generator turbines it requires as components.
