I noticed that the devs will move onto a crafting revamo after the combat revamp. As it stands pets do not decay all that much, infact I'd say that they last easily several months without ever needing to be replaced. As renewable sources of income we currently have tissues, petstims and additives. However these are all things which many other professions simply ask us to make schematics for while they provide the resources. I feel that bioengineers really do need a more active role in their profession when it comes to return bussiness items.
A long time ago there was alot of discussion about where the profession would move to. This was before the food and clothing tissues really became popular and before the petstims even existed. Many ideas were thrown around from bioengineers moving back into their roles as being able to increase the yield of bioharvesters to more outlandish ideas such as handling cybernetics for players. But some of these ideas didn't fit with the theme of starwars (not that the devs care about what is fictionally accurate anymore anyway) nor did they fit with what a bioengineer did.. ie. genetic manipulation and creature biology.
So one of the adaptions of the cybernetics idea was 'pet powerups'. Where essentially a pet would be surgically and genetically altered to have a number of additional traits which would only last a limited duration in many cases. This would work by every pet having a maximum number of implant slots, these varied depending on species (which solves the issue of everyone wanting cats at the moment) so that some could accept more thanothers. The implants would be organic in nature, varying from modified organs of existing animals being transplanted to actual alterations of the pets existing genetics and body chemistry.
The changes fell into two catagories. Permanent and temporary. The temporary ones would be far more powerful than the permanent ones and need to be replaced on a regular basis or they'd make the animal sick. These would be the transplanted organs. The permanent changes would be impossible to reverse and would be the body chemistry or genetic alterations. Each of the slots could take either and you could have a mixture of permanent features as well as temporary ones. A fixed change however uses up a slot.
All of the features were unique and varied. The possibilities nearly endless. Some would only be available if they were permanent while others would only be temporary. Examples of the new abilities a bioengineer would be able to give pets are as follows:
- increased damage
- increased accuracy
- regeneration
- damage resistance
- status effect resistance
- poisoned attacks
- diseased attacks
- increased agression
There would also be more unique abilites that fell into the more exotic and could be used by non-combat professions.
-E-type pheramone secretion (heals battle fatigue when players are near it)
-Biological self-reconstruction(heals itself by eating corpses of dead organics)
- A-type pheramone sectretion (makes agressive animals passive when in proximaty)
- S-type pheramone sectretion (draws animals to the pets location)
- 6th Sense (animal becomes aggitated when an opposing factional NPC/Player is nearby)
- Force Resistance (animal is immune to the force)
- Bacta Egg laying (animal will randomly produce eggs that have healing properties)
- Foraging sense (animal will find and dig uprare foraged items for you randomly)
Naturally the list could be nearly endless, you could even have an powerup that makes the animal produce a lightsource.
In the end though a balance would need to be made where the bioengineer is regularly wanted to implant or modify a pet. Some kind of device or maybe even a surgical unit should be required so that a house or something is needed by the bio-engineer to perform the operation. The bonuses wouldn't be huge, something along the lines of how the weapon powerups function. A permanent alterate might increase the damage by only 7% while a temporary one increases it by 20% for example. It might also be nice to have more non-functional but aethetic alterations possible. Things like making the animal smaller, larger or making them change color according to the climate or have a sparkly effect from their skin.
Thoughts?

New content for BE's?!??!!? are you CRAZY?
j/k, i actually love the ideas and think that they would be awesome. How many slots would the animals have? i would think that maybe it could be either another experimental bar or something based on cl in addition to skin (so you can't get cl 10's with super-high everything while MCH's could get an exceptional pet)

Hmmm I remember reading something about this. Thought it was a crack pipe daydream at the time. heh, some daydreams are cool though.
In the same vien (read crack pipe) I think i'd be cool if we could implant a turret of some kind that the owner could "remote fire". It could take standard weapons from a weaponsmith, and could use some kind of droid component as well (droid command module?). Rocket launching Gnorts?
Another thought is to have a tailor make a Pet Pack or sled. A CH could then turn a pet into a pack animal or sled puller. The pack animal would work like a droid with a storage module, and the sled puller would be mountable (or the sled would be at least). Would be fun to be pulled around behind a kimo sled, night get some use out of that skin.

I can see this being popular around Christmas time. Make a few swirl prongs, get the sled out, and put on your Santa/Elf outfit.
