Ok, because I'm an exceptionally dull person 
I decided to test out the DNA sampling failure rate at MBE.
I took 100 Gnort (CL4) samples with Master Scout but not using mask scent:
Successes :75
Fails: 14
Success but attacked: 2
Failed and attacked : 0
Success but critter died : 9
Total successes 86%
Total Fails 14%
Proposed additional tests: Using Mask Scent, Without Mask Scent mods (dropping exploration completely), Novice BE vs Gnorts, MBE vs Mutant Rancors

Try mid level creatures too....
I am grinding my alt to BE starting today with sampling yard trash.... I will sample plenty ofit, and try to remember and record results as a Novcie BE sampling

try mutant rancors... i had a lot of fun trying to get near them today. spent 2 hours and came back with 3 samples (which yesterday i spent about 40 mins and got 9 samples)

best way i found to sampl mutant rancors is mask scent and clothin which for a wookie means no backpack and find the damm things on a slope. if their on flat ground i can maybe crawl to within range 1 in 10 times . but on the side of a mountain i can get within range 90% of the time. t

I find the opposite to be true, just cant get them on the hills. I like them on the flat, preferably with a lot of trees around, remember dna sampling doesnt require LOS

I feel that I am unlucky when it comes to sampling rancors. I also found a superiorly special critter a Malkloc Plains walker with 100% kinetic and 100% stun. He was plowing through rancors right and left. I waited till I could sample him and did it about 5 to 6 times I was lvl III in sampling and failed every time eventually put him down cause I failed so much 
. I find that even as I have grown in sampling i'm still having the potential to fail more and more often with the higher lvl critters I try. I guess I will have to do a test on the giant bark might cave on rori or something see how it goes.

FWIW Malclok Plainswalkers arent sampleable. Only the Young ones are
