Out of 10 things that I made: 3 had critical failures on assembly, and 5 had critical failures on experimentation. I know that the critical failure rate is higher than it should be, but am I the only one that has experienced it this bad?

only because i usually quit after the 3rd crit fail and do something else

Your not alone... I lost over 100 DNA to crits before.... Haqven't made a pet since. With tissues if it crits no big deal I got more resources.

I had another "inept BE" night last night myself. It was just getting silly:

experiment: fail

experiment: crit faile

experiment: fail

experiment: success

experiment: fail

combine: crit fail

dna sample: fail

and on and on. I would have been laughing my ass off if it hadn't been me, lol.
