Alright, I have a question as a novice to the whole Bio-Engineer profession. Is DNA sampling supposed to be this hard?

I just picked up Bio-Engineer because I thought it looked like it might be fun as a crafting profession. So, after a little looking at shematics and such, I figured out I need 5 DNA samples for a generic template. Ok, so, I decide to pick up a mission (Level 9 - Rockmites) to see just how sampling goes.

I came to my mission and started following the first Rockmite. Having previously been a Creature Handler, I thought I had an idea on how this worked (in other words, have to stay near, yadda, yadda). The first thing I noticed was the massive hit to my mind pool. I could tell I wasn't currently set up properly for this, but I figured it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'll just get what I can from these mites and then get prepared for my REAL harvesting trip.

Then I get the failure notice. So, I sample again. Another failure. Three more samples and I have to sit on my duff while I let my mind regenerate.

I figured this would be better once I have some + focus foods. It shouldn't be a problem. I'll just continue on this nest for a moment. I really want to see what building a Bio-Engineer deed is like.

So, my mind refreshed, I stand and attempt to sample again. Five more attempts and I'm sitting again. Not to mention starting to get annoyed.

If there's one thing about me I should mention here, it's that I tend to get obsessed with getting results. It takes me quite some time before I can admit defeat.

So, with a refreshed mind pool, I go again. This time I get a result. The stupid little bug bites me! After killing it, I figured that at least I got some meat out of the deal. This is going to be important once I get my DNA.

I decide to go after the other mite that's wandering around the layer. Seven tries later, the bug is dead and I have nearly (but not quite) doubled my stack of meat.

Out of the entire layer. I was able to get ONE sample.

So, I decided I must have been taking on things that were too much for my level.

I go back to town, pull some Corellian Fried Ice Cream out of the bank ( + to Focus), and go take a mission without my gun equipped (Level 5 - Dwarf Nunas).

I start sampling and the Fried Ice Cream is working great. I don't need to sit and rest.

The sampling, however, is far from great. I didn't even get a sample from the little flightless buggers. It took more attempts than I can count to essentially accomplish what I could have done in 2 minutes (if that) with just my pistol (kill and harvest the birds).

So, I'm begging you Bio-Engineers out there to tell me what I'm doing wrong. Please tell me this gets better.

I don't want to have to get buffed, fill my stomach, and get high just so I can sample LONG ENOUGH to get a decent amount of DNA.

Please tell me there is something I can do to improve my sampling rate or else I fear I'm not long for this profession.

I can't even get XP because I just keep failing.

Please help me.

It's a little hard at first but it gets easier once you get a box. Those bugs will start dropping like crazy after that. I'm up to sampling III just got 27k of sampling tonight.

It is frustrating but be patient. I started my xp with very low lvl animals. And yes, its boring too. So I hunt some and DNA some. Im almost done with box 4 of DNA. Its taking me a month to get here. Good luck!

One of the annoying things about being a BE is that if you take a sample and your inventory is full, you'll fail every time instead of saying your inventory is full...

yeah, sample trash until you get to DNA 1 as the level creature you can sample is related to your level of DNA sampling I believe...

If you've got some cash, buy a droid with a chem crafting unit, pop some muon gold, sample until you puke, pull out your droid and create some dna templates. By the time you've made a few templates, the effect of the muon gold should have worn off and you pop another and start sampling again.

Find yourself an artisan with the foods tree or a chef. Make some Micronutrient suppliment for them and have them craft you some Aitha. This drink will heal your mind damage from sampling. You can drink maybe 6-8 of these back to back. I have a friend that makes me Aitha that heals around 160 pts of mind damage per drink. This can be improved with the Micronutrient Suppliment to around 230 pts (and that is not the greatest Micronutrient Suppliment either. I am only a 2122 BE).

I just started BE last week. I was having the same problem, until i realized my inventory was full.

I completeley emptied my inventory and was sampling away. I agree the weaker the creature the easier it is, BUT I was only novice and I was sampling greater sludge panthers and getting samples after 2 - 3 tries.

I was sampling very tough creatures, keep in mind to maskscent and drive very close to them and just stand next to your bike. If they attack, drive away, and come back. Works everytime.

Plus... sample on tough planets, as long as the creatures are non aggressive, you get wonderful xp for them.

Vasarian Brandy and Ryshcate. I can sample nonstop almost. after a while I have to heal my action pool.

Each sample costs 85 mind. the brandy increases your mind pool as well as making it regen fast.

I started with corellian butterflies and durnis and my sample rate was quite good. At DNA sampling II I was able to sample crimson blurrgs on Endor. about 410exp each. At DNA Sampling III I was finally able to go after young rancors. I was also surprised to find that bloodstained mereks sampled rather well as I haven't had any failures on them for some odd reason.
