Ok, I know.
I stink at consistency and math, so a wee bit of help please.
Now, you'd figure that with 19 failed dna samples off of MR's within 15 minutes means something right?
Please someone tell me the RNG will come around in my favor one evening so for each attempt I will get 2 VHQ samples....lie to me please!...and I did check, MR's are still 75 (I thought maybe they changed it and forgot to tell me)
/sigh
Then one of those new nightsister skills incapacitaed and killed me sooooooooo fast, that up until I popped up in the cloning center, the AI forgot to have me fall down, but did remember to decay all my stuff.

You will have good days and bad days... and no I'm not lying to you
One night you'll get 15 samples before your buffs have even worn off and other times you'll get only 1 or 2 if you're lucky

Anything for a fellow BE.
Very soon you will be swimming in VHQ MR dna. You will make the best pets available. You will be admired across all galaxies. You will then wake up
Good enough for you?

and while you are sampling DNA from the MR you will be the first to discover the Secret Resouce Data for tissues.

Things to consider:
Jawa Beer +10 or greater, not sure on cap for this stuff.
Mask Scent Clothing +25
Go after the pack instead of the stray... I have noticed that some strays are not as they seem... after multiple failes on a stray with no agro, I have seen them warp back to the pack, when I went there I was five for five.

Here is one thing you might try. I've read some interesting stuff from some high powered "math professor types" who swear that the unix/linux randomizerused is not random. So next time you fail 10 times in a row, or have 2 crit fails in a row, or something like that, STOP, and do something else. Maybe break out your survey tool and wait until you get a few successful samples in a row, or sample a durni and wait until you get a couple of those in a row, then resume what you were doing.

*technically* speaking theres no such thing as random in computers - they're not capable of being random, thats a purely human thing, and I think there are many psychology professors who would argue that even human randomness is not truely random, but based on various factors.
Just because its not possible to predict the outcome doesnt make it truely random.
In DAoC it was rumored that the RNG was seeded on your physical location in the world so if you had bad crafting sucess then you should move. Some people would jump up and down while crafting to keep the numbers random - whether it was the truth or just superstition I dont know, but it sure made the forge a funy place to be.

Right of course. I've built such circuits that mimic "randomness" (count numbers very very fast and when you're asked for a random number, produce whatever number you've "counted"up to, divided by the range over which the numbers are to be generatedetc.) but how "random" that is, is a statistical thing, so I'm way out of my league there.
But we've all experienced it though. 4 crit fails in a row, 20 failed samples in a row, crazy stuff like that. Statistically that almost can't happen, yet it does. I wish I had that thread bookmarked, it was pretty interesting reading.

How random things are depends on what the RNG is seeded on, when its seeded and how often its reseeded.
It works both ways though, sometimes you get a string of sucesses

Hmmm, not sure about RNG and all that stuff, but I remember reading a thread here, in these very BE boards a while ago that said if you were failing 10 times on a sample, it was time to move on to another group of whatever it was you were sampling. Me, I upped my limit to 15 times, and on MR, I'll sample 8 times and if no luck is had, I'll switch to another MR in the spawn. Just the other day, I snuck up on a spawn of 6. The first one I got a sample on the 6th try, the second on the 2nd try and the third I sampled 11 times and no luck. I switched to another Rancor in the spawn and sampled it in three tries. Then I went back to the other and sampled it in 5.
Last three times I went MR sample gathering, I got 10 samples in an hour and a half each time. This includes crawling time and pausing 30 seconds to a minute when the Rancor get all inquisitive (?) or excited (!). Now, my recent success may be completely based on luck or whatever, but it has worked so far and I'm not using +25 mask scent clothes or jawa beer. I'm getting scared reading this post, though. I'm thinking the next time I go Rancor sample hunting, it'll take me 3 days to get one sample...

Yepp, means that you´ve still got at least 2.3h left of your byffs to get those lovely Mutant RaaaR samples
As mentioned before in this thread, you´ll have bad days and good days

Maybe I need to /jump when putting together pets... I had 3 crit fails on final combines and failures on 7 seperate pets while experimenting. Or, Maybe I need to put down this hammer before I smash my computer in tiny bits...

Heyas All,
I went through a couple times when I couldn't get even one sample for hours. But the last times I sampled MR I tried somthing different. What I do is I go up to a group and select one to sample that is on the outskirts as much as possible. Then I go up behind MR and begin sample. As I'm sampling I move between the MR's legs and in front then I go to about 9 meters in front, turn around and run back the way I came so that when i get the sample message I'm at full/nonburstrun speed heading away from MR. It worked MUCH better.
In relation to this thread could that be preventing the RNG from getting in a failure rut so to speak? Would it perhaps be the equivalent of 'Jumping up and down" as some mentioned in other games. Just a thought and another possible technique to try as it has worked well for me. Also make sure you put obstacles between you and furious MR as you are running away, hehe. This works particularly well in thick forests. It seems to slow the mob down and I seldom have to use burst run.
