updated - in view of Kaomond's post and testing by myself.
I have bugged this in game, also I went back and looked on the TC-buglist and it is there as well.
Do NOT trust the number reported as being in your resource containers unless it agrees with the small number at the top-right corner. When you drag and drop a stack of resources onto another (or put into a backpack) the number on the resource container ie. 158/100000 is NOT updated. The only fix to this is to split it into a pile of what you think it should be - 1 and the last unit. All very well until you get above 1000 units and then you have to guess the last 3 digits.
Another fix is to logout/in. Kaomond says changing zone updates it as well possibly.
checked putting on vendor - It showed entirely the wrong amount until I got it onto the vendor and asked for details and then it was ok. So that is one worry gone - vendors will show the right amount.
You are warned

I've been told that if you zone or logout/in the numbers update, haven't tried it yet but will take a look later.
