The question is relative of course. The real answer depends on the individual and their play style. The trick is to sift the holo-BE's from the "real" BE's. The answers you get will be very different depending on who you listen to.

Bio-engineer is a crafting class. We are a crafters crafter meaning we make products other crafters use to make their products better. Its a challenge to get the best ingredients and combine them with experimentation in the hopes of creating the highest level tissue or pet stim. If you enjoy a challenge and don't mind the tedium (all professions have their down side) then you will enjoy the tissue tree of bio-engineering.

Master creature handler goes hand in hand with the clone tree of bio-engineering. The up coming patch is supposed to re-vamp the clone system. Most BE's are looking forward to playing around with it. Potentially you will be able to make creature handler animals that other master creature handlers can't find in the wild. That alone is a benefit to a profession you already possess. Collecting DNA from high level critters is the challenge here. You will be required to sneak up on uber critters and stick them with a needle, then hope to the gods the critter doesn't bite your head off. It can be fun and it can be frustrating. Nothing comes easy but for me that is the enjoyment. If it was easy I'd be bored quickly and I'd move on to something else.

This is broad and pretty general but hopefully it helps answer a few of your questions.

Hmm, really difficult to compare BE to the combat professions. I will say though, that BE, to me, is probably the funnest of the crafting professions just because it is so different (even though there are been all these posts recently begging for BE to become just like weaponsmith.. grrrrr). The tissues portion of BE is very much like architect, weaponsmith, etc. in that you spend a lot of time gathering materials and doing factory runs. There's nothing particularly "fun" about this other than getting some recognition from customers, making some friendships there, and making a lot of credits. Plus the satisfaction that comes with popularity. The "clone" tree however is another animal altogether (forgive the pun). You have to go out into the wild, study animals, hunt, sample dna, and basically stay alive long enough to get the stuff you need. It's fun and there's also something very rewarding about crafting such an animal and having others use it and appreciate it in combat. I've been on missions with groups where everyone in the group is using a pet that I created. That sort of satisfaction is something you don't get from the combat classes.

I have such fun and I hope that the clone patch will just make it that much more a hoot. My friends think I am nuts when I say "DNA Time!" After all, they watched me do it and tell me "you gota be nuts, no wiunder you have such fun, its perfict for you!" My house is call mad scientest lab. This new patch I am so thrilled that mixing this with that will really do something thiough I still have hard time finding CL70 critters. That in itself can be fun or a pain. I have gone days and not see anything. I don't really care to make stims but it pays the bills. Tissues I make to order and not much that but I rather make critters and get splatted into the ground.

Yes I have fun with it and if the fix is half what they say (and not to bad bugged) I will have that much more fun!

What you described is what the BE profession needed, and I originally thought this was how it was done until I found out how you could do that 'refinement" method which to me is like an exploit really. Im so glad they changed this. No more godzilla clones from worrt DNA!

If BE was not going to be changed to what it will be this week, I would have said the BE cloning tier was a joke. It no longer will be.

Indeed. It's a very unusual profession with a lot of role-playing potential (if you've ever wanted to play Dr. Frankenstein, BE is nice), and the activities involved (sampling DNA) and the products we output (especially clones) add to it's uniqueness. It's not especially action-oriented, and it takes up quite a few skill points to master, but it is satisfying when you see your new creature stretch its legs for the first time or slip on that +25 scent-masking outfit.

Be advised that bio-engineers are highly dependent (I won't say interdependent, because no other profession actually NEEDS us) on other professions. So, your BE experience will be better if you have some of those other professions (CH, Tailor, and/or Chef) or are close friends with someone who is. While a chef can make food on her own, and a tailor can make clothing on his own, our tissues just sit in inventory without someone else to synergize with. The same can be said for our clones. Anything we create above CL 10 is of no use to us personally unless we are dual-profession with CH.

And, as Tal-N so eloquently stated, one week from now we will, in all likelihood, be an entirely different profession.
