Thread: Tips for getting close to Rancors
I've been told by folks that Enraged Bull Rancors have the best defences, so I want to try and get samples from them. Anyone have any tips for how to get close to these guys? Or is it not possible or worth the effort?

It's possible to get close and cuddly with them, but hardly worth the effort as I believe they are above CL 75, which is the highest level they will allow us to sample...
You can sample any level now I've been told.
I colleauge of mine sampled a Kimogila. I have sampled engraged bullrancors myself.
Well the main thing is to not rush things and let them proceed naturally. I would recommend on the first meeting a bouquet of flowers. Not roses mind you as they imply a more serious and longterm relationship then is warranted this soon. I would suggest daisies as they are more of a lets get together and have fun, but you wont see me in the morning, flower. After all they look pretty but you just through them out soon with no regrets and no hurt feelings. I also find a nice wine and candlelight dinner goes far to securing that special closeness you desire. I would suggest a Moet et Chandon Jeroboam Millesime 1993 Dom Perignon and a nice sauteed bolle bol cafe tenderized and complimented with scalloped Endorian tubers. For desert perhaps a frozen creme de la venom-filled arachne to make the rancor a little more relaxed and suggestible. try this out and see how it works, but remember if the rancor says no, it means NO, and you would be a cad of the first order to try to pursue it further.

I have found that if I can walk in (with /mask) up to 30m w/o being noticed, I can then make a dash (run) within range to try and sample.
Only problem is I am 3 for my last 30 in getting samples
You can also get them to fight one another and sample the winner as it's prize lol.
But I learned the hardway that enraged bull and ancient bull are not sampleable.
Putting aside the fact that you cannot sample these creatures, as they're CL is too high, let me share with you some tips on approaching Rancors:
1) If you can afford it, invest in clothing that gives you additional camo/scent modifiers. I personally have pants, a shirt and a duster that bring my total camo ability to +44 and maskscent ability to +138. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have Ranger skills, which bring these up even further, but I don't.
2) If you are a Master Ranger or have one with you, then craft a Dathomir Camo Kit and use it.
3) /maskscent and /peace before approach (I have tied these to a single macro).
4) If you're camo isn't that great (probably because you're not a Master Ranger and don't have one with you), then approach the beast from the rear. They CAN see, and if they spot you, then they will go aggro.
5) Walk, don't run.
6) Don't have anyone else with you--do this by yourself. Don't have pets outs. Don't out vehicles out. These things have scent and can be seen, and thus increase your liklihood of being detected.
While this isn't related, I also have a hefty supply of Muon Gold on me when I'm doing this. Nothing worse than succeeding in not being detected, just to have to stand around waiting for your mind to heal. The longer you're there, the better the chance that you're going to be detected by some creature--if not the Rancor you're sampling, then one of his buddies or even another mob.
Another unrelated item, I never approach a mob if I'm tired. If the bloody thing goes aggro on you and you can't burst run, you will be experiencing an express trip to the nearest cloning facility

I'm not patient enough to WALK and I don't like walking anyway.
Here's what I do. First off, I'm a wookie with Scout trained up to level 4 in the maskscent line. I have a +13 Wookie Shoulder pad that I made for myself with my Master BE and another toon that's an alt that's a Master Tailor.
It really sucks that the Shoulder Pad is the only freaking Wookie item that takes Reinforced Fiberplast Panels. We use a ton of Synthetic Cloth, but Reinforced Fiberplast Panels? One freaking sucky-looking shoulder pad. You don't even get *two* pads. Just one.
Get on my Swoop Bike that my Master Tailor made (he's also a Master Artisan and Master Architect). I have a macro that dismounts, masks scent, and remounts me as long as my mount (bike or Kaadu) is targeted. Mask Scent, and ride up to the Bull Rancors.
Generally, they don't uncover me. If the do, I rid out of range, wait until the mask scent timer is up, and re-do the macro. Ride back up. Then, when the Rancor is motionless, I dismount and attempt to DNA sample.
If I agro, I click on the bike and do "Enter Vehicle". It may take a second or two (which seems like FOREVER when a freaking Bull Rancor is whacking on you), but you'll mount the bike. Then, ride. I like to scream as I run from my assailants.
I've found /sit /logout will clear agro. At least it seems to for me at the moment.
The truth is I tend to succeed with Bull Rancors pretty often but I kill them fairly quick. I may have a good run with, say a Piket of four or so DNA samples, but I'll rarely get that many with a Bull Rancor before killing it. That seems odd to me.

Does a camo Dath kit work better than a mask scent +70 say
I know you cant use a camo kit and a mask scent at the same time so which one
is better for getting close to rancors?
