I mean, is there anything a BE can do to make a pet faster than normal?

yes, use a cat skin

Pet speeds are based on the skin being used. Cats are the fastest pets.

I was thinking in terms of mounts. Are any mounts faster than the others? Can you engineer a pet to be faster other than using a certain skin?

Mounts are all about the same speed when it comes to regualr running around. The Carrion Spat is #1 in speed when galloping with the Kaduu #2.
