I had a customer the other day, that wanted a pet, around CL30 and he wanted it ASAP, I told him I had some DNA at the lab and would see what I had, no garantee. I toss some stuff together and get a CL 37 pet, so I try again and get a CL 26, he says that is fine, since it has 50% kin, and str poison, str disease ranged attack, hits for about 400+ and an almost 10K ham. He gets it, and leaves, after getting it trained by another CH.
I get a tell later, Great pet!
Next day, I log on, he asks if he can return it and get his refund.
I replyed nope.
I went out of my way to make it, since he wanted that night. I only had an odd assortment of dna, mananged to make an ok pet with some good attacks.
Just drives me nuts some people.

In general I don't take orders now either.
I'll let someone reserve a pet if I know I'm heading out to make something like that anyway, but otherwise everything I make is for my vendor and they get a WP to it when they ask for a pet.
I take the odd special job if I think it's interesting enough to be fun. My idea of 'fun' is a little warped though
Just ask anyone who's seen me trying to sample Enraged Rancors...

It's actually a lot worse in other crafting professions. I've definitely had people ask me "hey make me a CL 35 rancor, oh and what will you give me for this CL 6 durni in trade?" But the good news is thatnobody can offer you pets through the vendor no matter what (once they are in the datapad) so we have that "excuse".
But as a tailor (or architect, or weaponsmith, or armorsmith) people offer you their old stuff on the vendor without even asking, or buy stuff and then return it. You want to be nice, and friendly, and reasonable, but it's a tough juggling act.

I had a guy once ask me to make him a Thundercat. I had the urge to say, "Hey presto! You're a Thundercat!"

There are good sides and bad sides, sure people cant offer things randomly to our vendors but if we go out and make a custom pet for a client and then they turn around and decide they dont want it what do you do with it? Its not like its a set of armour that will sell anyway. Some custom orders are very specific and might not sell to anyone else.

why didnt he want it? he just tried it and decided it wasnt as uber as he thought it'd be?
with those stats its still good enough to earn back its price at any rate

It happens, but it happens more as a tailor than as a bio engineer (tome anyway). When someone requests a "lime greenfighter flight suit, and a yellow robe of honor" then doesn't pick it up, doh! Same thing with a pet, but it's a pretty infrequent occurance, and I don't really get too worked up over it. I just put it on the vendor and look at it as an opportunity to broaden my inventory, which isn't such a bad thing.

the problem with me is once i finally match the pet to the customer's order.... i title it "order for (customer's name)"
doesn't sell too well to others who don't pick them up

LOL. For some reason that struck me as the funniest thing. I sat here and laughed til my co-workers started looking at me like I was a freak.

I generally don't take orders either. I find its MUCH easier to just stock my vendor with an assortment of pets. That way I don't have to answer a ton of questions or worry about hitting a precise level target. Plus the customer sees exactly what they're getting and doesn't have to ask me to repeat the stats.
I do get less business this way than if I were actively advertising for custom orders, but its enough business to pay my upkeep and have a little extra for a rainy day.
