Here is something to amuse you. We did this last year, but I think pretty much everyone that participated last year is long gone, and it is always interesting to see what type of players we have here.

http://www.andreasen.org/bartle/test.cgi

and a really great article on what it all means here

http://www.brandeis.edu/pubs/jove/HTML/v1/bartle.html

My results I keep in my sig. I'm a pretty classic "achiever" type, which seems to be fairly rare in this game.

If people would like to take the test and post your results here, I'll be happy to compile the results

I'm surprised that socializer scored as high as it did...

I hate that test.

I don't think I hate it for any normal reasons... and I'm having a hard time nailing the precise thing that triggers my response. I think it's somewhere in the 'generic template' style, which assumes PvP, 'gold', and 'experience levels', and which forces me to try to pick the least inaccurate answer for some of the questions.

personally, I think MUD/MOO/MMORPG PvP is flawed. twitch PvP I enjoy, but adding 'classes', 'levels', 'professions', and whatnot, makes for a player-on-player combat system that is nearly impossible to balance. a PvP system without balance is a griefing system. fortunately, PvP is becoming (mostly) optional in SWG.

gold might work well to measure wealth in other games, but in SWG, assets are often more intangible. SWG is, to my knowledge, fairly unique in the complexity of the overall crafting system, which in turn puts a high value on resources. a discussion of the way the economy in SWG works (or doesn't work) from server-to-server is more than I feel up to right now, but it'd be hard to argue that SWG's monetary system much resembles anything from the days of the early MUD's.

as for 'experience levels' vs. skill allotments... the two concepts are radically different. comparing 'two levels of experience' with 'two skill boxes' doesn't work, since 'skill boxes' eat up a finite supply of 'skill points', while 'levels' stack indefinitely (sometimes capped at an arbitrary upper limit) and (in most cases) permanently.

that said... or ranted... I took the test and gritted my teeth at the bad questions.

Explorer 66% (must be the scout/ranger/TC in me)
Socializer 60% (look, ma! forum posts!)
Achiever 46% (if they say so. I feel more like ozzymandius most days)
Killer 26% (don't be fooled. nunas ph34r m3)

edit: the killer rating, as far as I can tell, is primarily the PvP aspect of killing... which is why one reason (as noted above) that I don't like the test.

Achiever - 86%

Killer - 53%

Explorer - 40%

Socializer - 20%

Hmmm, I fall in the same category as only 4% of fellow test takers lol. And such a high killer percentage...tsk tsk, that can't be good.

Well only 3% of players pall under the same category as me, yet I do feel like a lot of those questions were forcing me into a category rather than seeing what I am really like.

I've taken it a few times over the years. It's always interesting to see how the scores change depending on the game I'm playing.

What a peculiar little test that is... frankly I expected to come out more of an EAS than ESA. Interesting nonetheless.

How many of you also took the Kiersey Sorter test linked and the end of the survey? Perhaps we could include the results of that for kicks...I ended up as a "Guardian".

I agree the test seems to be geared around the "generic" MUD design ... doesn't *quite* fit for SWG but here's what I got:

Socializer - 93%

Explorer 73%

Achiever 33%

Killer 0%

Which is rather amusing since I do occasionally have a bloodthirsty streak and want to go out and kill stuff

Gypsia d'Catman - Tough Chick with a Flamethrower
Catman Dewback - Famed Trando ex-band leader of the Wookettes
Felis Con'Colori - Bothan Spy back before there was a "Spy"
Larrana Darkewave - A Silent Dancer

All dead as of 11/30/05. We tried. Gysia's flamethrower blew up. Catman was arrested for trumped up charges of slavery. Felis grew cold in the grip of Darth SOE. Larrana finally swallowed her NDA and choked.

Explorer - 80% (Well, Exploration was the first skill tree I got to 4... but I hated running across planets at the time.)

Socializer - 53% (I started off as an entertainer.)

Acheiver - 40% (Yeah, I don't try for money too much, and I'm a "casual" player.)

Killer - 26% (I pwn butterfly drones and squalls. Ph34r M3.)

Hmm. Yes, have to pigeonhole myself into one of a few categories. I think it might be interesting, from a psychological point of view, to see how many people that play SWG would take the MMPI-II. (That's the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory,2nd revision. A 3-hour long typical test.)See how the game players go demographically, if there are links between certain traits and in-game choices in profession, PA, and the like.
