If you are going there solo to sample I would look elsewhere. There is usually an Enraged Bull Rancor at the opening... so first step is to get by him.

Go to the cave on a swoop, get the bull to notice you and run away. Then you can slowly return, park the bike, enter the cave, and get killed by something inside

Another great place for tons of rancors is near the Dathomir Sarrlacc Pit. I was there with a group on Saturday and there were a good number of packs of all kinds of rancors, especially the mutant variety.

My character is a new MBE, so he has the highest level of sampling. But he still failed almost half the time. Another thing, one of my buddies in the group is a combat medic/doctor. He ran around with me, just far enough out of range (>40m) to not get aggroed. I got aggroed many times, sometimes from other close groups of rancors and got incapped a lot. I even died two or three times. But with the CM/Doc, he was able to heal me or get me up, and was able to rez me when I died. I'd say that a doctor is pretty much someone who really needs to be in your group. Otherwise you'll have to clonea number of times and fight that decay thing.

Since you have to get right up to the mob to sample, I was in range of at least three or four rancors at a time.I have +70 mask scent and it broke a good 80% of the time, including walking and going prone. So, my advice here would be to get +25 mask scent clothes. It can only help!

Good luck in hunting these beasts. I was able to get 9 samples from mutants, in about an hour-and-a-half. But while it was challenging, I completely enjoyed it the whole time.

You'll often find that the value of the maskscent skill is almost directly proportional to the CL rating of the species it works reliably against. Thats why I can crawl up to normal Kimogila without much hassle but something over CL100 is nearly impossible.
