It boggles my mind how often I fail sampling DNA especially lately. I decided this weekend to pay attention to how often I fail taking 100 samples. I only counted the samples from wild critters, cu pa to be more precise (wanted the make CL10 run of the mills with ranged). I killed a lot of cu pa I must say
. I did no regen sampling.
I failed 38% of the time
I would think a master BE would do much better especially with low level animals. Can anyone shead some light on this please?

I think it is a "need-based" system. If you Need the DNA, you will fail most of the time. If it is something you casually want to see what resists it has, a novice will get VHQ samples 85% of the time, and HQ the rest.
I have been having a miserable fail rate on the mutant rancors and several other high-level type creatures, but negligible failures on other creatures, in the 50-60 range. Mantigrue reapers and screechers, Merek harvesters and kings, bark mite burrowers and queens all seem to be reasonable for sample rates; Mutant rancor seems to be absurdly difficult.
I do not see the logic or the reasonable difficulty imposed here, but an extreme differentiation that seems far from appropriate. The level of frustration with this portion of the profession is too high to accept at this point for me, and I am strongly considering giving up petmaking except for the few for my own or a few friends' use.

at master, i fail about 20% of the time on harvestors, BMBQ, and the like. although the need based system seems to make sense to me =)

Hmmm I'll have to review my results. I needed the DNA at the beginning of the study but I didn't need 100+ samples. It may be I failed a lot at the beginning when the need factor was highand none at the end when the need factor was zero.
I do recall failing 4 times in a row which started the whole fail rate study.

I had the same problem this morning on Endor. BMBs and their queens just really did not seem willing to donate DNA to the cause, and when they did, it was a fatal thing almost every time (for the bugs, not for me). It was just frustrating to only get one sample from a queen and she'd keel over, or I'd fail and get aggro-ed 3 times and then succeed...and then she'd kick the bucket.
I noticed my fail rate on even low-to-midlevel stuff is pretty high of late as well. Maybe since they've decided to relatively decrease the crit fail chance in crafting, they upped our DNA fail rate to compensate. We're a small enough community that they can afford to tick us off, yes?
I like the need-based system. It seems very applicable to the situation

Something i noticed is that when i first start sampling from a new creature type, my fail rate is really high. But as i continue to sample them over a few days, the fail rate goes down to about 5%. From then on it stays at 5%. UntilI try another new type.

I think you are on to something here. The stuff I sample all the time, I get less than 5% failure on sampling. But let me spot some new breed and take a casual poke, and I fail much more often.
So rather than need based, it may be familiarity based. "Oh, look, the guy with the needle is back, ho hum."

But I've been sampling cu pa forever. I haven't sampled any for a week or so. Maybe they forgot about me so the familiarity wasn't there anymore.Thatmight explain the high fail rate.
four fails in a row is insane especially when the critter gets mad and bites me. And no, my inventory wasn't full.
