I've never gotten past +4 melee. . . What are people doing to get 5, much less 6?

I can't remember the resources for +5 but it involved eggs in 2 slots for 980+ in the relevent qualities, the rest will have been 900+ too. Screwy failure results perhaps?

The resource properties for melee defense are the same as everything else. Experimentation does two random rolls, one for each stat. This one was obviously just a freakish one.
Keep in mind that a Novice Swordsman, for example, only has a +5 melee defense. With two of these tissues you get over twice the abilities of a novice of an Advanced profession.

I'm reasonably sure it's capped at +5/+20, no matter the resources used...I don't think +6 is possible, freakish roll result or no

The PE and Flavor make more difference on tissues in my experience than the OQ. OQ determines the initial combine, so it gives you the starting point, which is important, but the secondary stats give you the range of experimentation, and can make a LOT more difference than the OQ in the final outcome of the tissue.
I have also seen better results in using 2 points per experiment than in single or 3, not sure if this would hold up statisticly or not but anecdotal evidence seems to support it.
I was making +5/+17 tissues last night, I will have to check the materials I had but they were far the best I have done; generally 4/16 is the max I am able to get.

I've never managed to create anything higher than +4/+18. That you got it up to +6 is pretty damned amazing, in my opinion.

+6 is very good in my experience, +5/+18 is the best I've had and that was will pretty damned good resources. The Melee bonus isn't really meant to hit 25 without including a fair number of panels, 5-7 ish.
