Only one combat capable creature can be active at a time for a non-CH . If he has a droid with combat capabilities out, that might be the issue. Gurrecks are quite acceptable as non-CH pets; I use them much of the time for my non-CH creations, so it must be related to another issue besides agressive type.

That's the best guess I can make without being there.

Ok so the skin is not aggressive and the level is ok - so the only things left are to check he has room in his datapad and that he doesnt already have 2 creature pets. Secondly, dont try to tame and train pets indoors - it gets iffy - especially around starports

Ahh, thank you both for your responses. I will definitely make note of the no taming indoor thing. I think the problem is that he is new so he had his newbie helper droid out. Odd because I don't think it is a combat droid, but I'll make sure he puts it up first and see what happens. Thanks again!

Pretty sure it ended up as non-CH can only have 1 pet/droid out at at time. When you get NCH you can have a pet and droid out.

It doesnt have to be a combat droid - any droid will cause the problem. For non-ch it is 1 pet out at any time regardless of pet type.

I also gave a gurreck (level 10) to my friend. At first it wouldn't let him have the pet at all. (He used to have CH and dropped it so he had pets in his datapad) He gave me his pets and trade went successfully. When he tried to tame it, It said he lacked the skills and that he should see the trading in pets section of his holocron. He remebered that he had 4 BE made brackasets in his bank, so went and got then and traded them to me. After that it tamed.... don't know if that was a coincidence.
