Thread: How are you guys suggest sampling be done on a Mutant Rancor?

Obviously, all of us are getting requests from CH's wanting Lvl 70 Kimos. I got slammed with this last night. I tried several times to approach rancors but I only had Exploration IV Maskscent. Unfortunatly, I had some bad results trying to get that DNA.I'm producing a mess of tissue cloths to add to my skill. I wanted to hear any tactics you guys may be using. I tried several times with a master ranger at my side with the complex camo and had poor luck just getting close to a rancor even with that on me.

With exploration 4 (rating 70 skill in mask scent) and no enhanced clothing I can get near them enough to attempt sampling.

Here's my trick, hoping it works for you (or someone):

I try to situate myself about 60m away with nothing between me and the will-be donor but a nice, flat area (this is important due to movement speed).

I then go prone and hit Mask Scent, in that order. From there, I creep up until I hit the 16m mark, at which point I start banging on /sampledna. I contiue to approach to about 10m or so, as this gives me a bit more time to respond and hopefully stay in-range should Big and Nasty walk away from me, while still keeping enough distance that I can stand and run while maintaining a good chance of survival.

A couple things I make 110% sure I have on my hotkey bar when I'm doing this (keeping in mind that I play with an EQ-style layout, not the default, so I have more freedom of mouse and keys by default):
Mask Scent
Stand
Prone
Warning Shot (from Ranged Support 3)
PistolMeleeDefence1 (From Pisoleer, column 4, box 1)
Sample DNA
Peace

Of course, I have more, but when sampling, those are the really important ones. I know most won't have Pistol Whip, but if you do and can stick it followed closely by a warning shot (KD creatures are extremely vulnerable) you can get away pretty easily -- with a bit of luck of course).

Anyway.. that's what I do. Maybe you can use a bit and meld it into your own system

I found out a interesting tactic yesterday while sampling a Lvl 60 mob. Since I have no Marksman skills soI improvised. Here is how I get a mess of dna:

1) I put down my speeder bike near the sample site.

2) I then would mask up and get as close as possible to the lair an put down a camp. This seems to form a safe spot I could move in and out of when making attempts. I also pulled out a gsp, fast moving and can take a few hits.

3)I would let the gsp get aggro and pull the target away from the lair. While the target ran by me I put up mask scent and stayed close to the chase until the sample target gave up and started walking back to lair. As soon as aggro would fall 9 times out of 10 my mask scent held.

4) Sample creature on walk back until they warped back to lair. This usually would net two samples.

Usually I ended this procedure at or near my camp and this effect would carry over to other creatures in the lair immiediate vicinity. I have not tried this in mutant rancors yet but I hope it works.

I'm only novice ranger and I just got 7 Mutant Rancor samples. All I did was hold down the shift key and walked right up to them. If they detected me I would just stop in my tracks and wait until I could /maskscent again. Then move forward.

Funny thing is, when I aggroed them while sampling they wouldn't death blow me even though they are deathblow=yes. I was incapped about 10 times (never 3 times within the 10 minute auto-slay period) but never DB'd. Another wierd thing is that if I aggroed them they would incap me and then fight each other. hmm... maybe that's why I wasn't DB'd. Just thought of that.

Anyway... Anyone have any idea what DNA should be mixed with this stuff? I don't want to go over the CL70 cap and Mutant Rancors are CL75. I was thinking regular Rancor but thier kenetic resist is only 30.

I would get some slinking voritor DNA, Arachne Queen DNA, or good Merek DNA because all their kinetics are >=50%. It would be ideal to combine with frenzied graul dna but they were **edit** hard to find last night. When I do combine and I want particular special attacks I aim for special one with dna in the physical, mental, aggression. The wanted secondary special two attack I use the prowerss and psych.
