Guys, is there any hard and fast rules about how many samples you can take from a 1st (or subsequent) generation pet. Reason I ask is because I lost 2 pets last night after only one sample, but from others I got 3 samples no problems. Is this normal? Is this the risk associated with 2nd generation pets?

Yes, killing your 1st generation pet after 1 sampling attempts and worse yet a failed attempt with no resulting sample is the risk you take. I've had completely random luck with sampling 2nd generation pets from 0 samples to 8 or 9 before destroying the 1st gen pet. The only thing I have noticed is when i try to sample lvl 60 or above 1st generation pets I seem to fail more often and as a result get fewer samples before destruction. Has anyone else seen this?

My pets were level 26 and 21 when the life was sucked out of them by my DNA needle. Alas they never had the chance to grow

when I'm making CL10 pets, I can SOMETIMES magnify the DNA... that is:
5 DNA = 1 clone.
1 clone = 5+ DNA.
this is at the low CL's. with luck, 50 samples of DNA can make 10 pets which can be resampled for 50-55-60-65 units of DNA... making 10 pets into 11, 12, 13, or 14...
as CL rises, success falls. I count myself lucky if I can recover 5 units of DNA from a CL23 or CL35 clone.
your results may vary, but don't expect an endless supply of DNA from resamples, unless the clone CL is low.

Oh ok - so in the same way you are likely to get more samples from lower level creatures in the wild, the same applies to pets in your inventory. Makes sense I guess!
specifically, your chance to sample DNA from a CLONE is the same as your chance to sample DNA from a WILD critter... depends on your skill, and the CL.
I've tried in vain to get a DNA sample from a CL86 clone at master... which supports the CL75 cap for DNA sampling.
do NOT, however, assume that success is a linear function of CL vs skill... but if you get more DNA successes from low CL clones, and less from high CL's... don't be surprised.
as with all things, there seems to be a 'sweet spot' for DNA success. at master, I'd guess it's somewhere around CL 20 or less.
