Thread: My night sampling a mutant rancor

I love these threads, so I thought I'd start one of my own, recanting my experience with a lone mutant racor I found wandering aimlessly on a Dathomir mesa.

"A creature has detected you, despite your attempts at camoflage!" I speed away until he gets bored of chasing me.

I remask, and inch my speeder within sample range.

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

"A creature has detected you, despite your attempts at camoflage!"

In my excitement I push the mouse off the mousepad, and can't target my bike. he rancor hits me in the head, and I wake up in the cloning center. I store my bike from the datapad, lest the mutant feel like exercising his chompers on my ride. I reinsure, and zoom back to my waypoint, where he is still waiting.

"A creature has detected you, despite your attempts at camoflage!"

Argh. I wait, and remask. Some shear mites look on, undoubtablywondering why some idiot on a speederbike is trailing 7m behind this killer of killers. Eventually he stops, most likely admiring a butterfly that alighted upon his nose. I stick a needle in his @ss.

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

"Failed to retrain a viable DNA sample."

Aggro. Hop on bike. Flee until rancor becomes amused with blossoming dandelions.

This ballet of stealth, needlework, and adrenal bursts of fear and evasion went on for over two hours. Total successful samples: 0.

Tired and defeated, I figured I'd try again when I finish the last box of Tissue Eng and get master before I revisiting Mutant sampling. With my nemisis silouetted against the hazy Dathomir sunset, I sat down in the wilds and began my logout sequence.

The mutant just stood there, a vacant, autisticsmile at the corners of his maw. The last thing I saw before the screen went blank was him scratching his butt.

Heh.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I am pretty sure that Muties are CL 70. You need master BE to sample those guys and even then I have Maskscent bonus clothes and i still /mask and then crawl up to the buggers starting 70m away.

Takes a while but my experience is that if you stay laying down they wont DB you if they aggro and you stay still.

Oh and BTW if you are in need of Mutant Rancor DNA (which is pretty much required for high level pets) go visit Rancor Valley. It's the area surrounding the 'Dathomir Sarlaac' POI.

Nice recap, Frostbite! I know what you're talking about all too well! Severely frustrating. I'll bring your little tale along next time I knock on the door of mr M. Rancor. It will definately cheer me up...

Evidently I'm still tired, as I didn't even notice that I for some reason decided that "retrain" works interchangeably with "retrieve". *sigh*

I didn't know you had to be master....that little tidbit would have saved me some time, lol.

You're not going to have much luck sneaking up on things on your speeder either. It's at least as bad, possibly worse then trying to sneak while running. You really need to use the bonus you get from crawling to reliably sneak up on mutants.

Try this with mutants:

1) Find and approach the mutant camp. Your approach is actually fairly critical, you need to make sure there aren't any enraged or other higher level rancors nearbye. They will sniff you out constantly. When approaching the mutant camp, try to find a mutant who is a little bit aways from his buddies. Also, and this is very important, scout out the area and find somewhere you can run to that is relatively free of other agressive creatures.

2) As your approaching your targeted mutant, if your maskscent drops, just stop and re-apply.

3) If you get close enough to sample, go ahead and sample.

4) If the mutant agro's, try to lead it away from the rest of the mutants into the area you identified earlier. (also hope and pray the mutant doesn't trigger its ae attack and start a fight with the rest of the mutants)

5) The mutant will stop chasing you, and often times starts heading back to his nest, typically walking at a snails pace. This is the chace you've been waiting for, dash in, if mask scent doesn't drop, get your samples.

In general the idea is to peel away a single mutant into a free area so that sneaking up on it is much easier to do. With a little practice you can get good at this process and increase your sampling success dramatically.

It probably doesn't work when there is a group of mutants, but I found that as soon as the rancor dropped aggro, I could fly around inside 23m with impunity. I'd get behind and follow 7-10m behind him until he stopped, at which point I'd get off the bikeand sample. Heck, sometimes he'd turn around and walk over me as I stood there, midsample, paying no mind whatsoever.

When facing a group though, you'd probably have a few going in and out of the maskscent check range often.

I've used this on groups, it seems to work well enough. The only time I curse is when one triggers its ae attack and then they all start fighting each other.

At least 3 times out of 5 I can pull a single mutant away from a pack of mutants and get in 1-3 sample attempts before it either re-agro's on me or makes its way close enough to the pack for my maskscent to drop.

What I found that hampered my progress the most was getting sniffed out by other rancors in the area, especially enraged rancors.
