Thread: Specials and to-hit

Ok so it's been a bit since we've run a "theory" thread (the last one being about the to-hit values) and i've been noticing something with my pet's specials.

I currently have a cl 8 pet with the monster 9k-6k-4k style ham and about 45kin resist, and i worked on it a bit and managed to mesh together my pet with a couple of specials that i thought would be helpful for me: dizzy (i'm a pikeman and have trouble getting it to stick) and strong poison =D

to say the least, i'm very happy with the pet. it tanks very well, and having made it myself gives me a bit of pride when i show it to people and have them say "you got THAT in a squall?!?!?" plus it's fun having people duel it when they dont' look at the pet and find out halfway into the duel that the pet just isn't dying as fast as they thought it would.

The problem i've been having trouble with is this: the strong poison doesn't stick. ever. I've had it tank a few animals, even had a guildie duel it when showing it to them. But the poison just wouldn't stick (i let them fight it out for about 3 to 5 min before i got tired of it).

I kept going over in my head reasons why the poison wouldn't stick. i know that the poison and disease specials apparently work "randomly" but no matter whether i called the pet for the special or not it never used (or at least stuck) the special.

Then i got to wondering if the to-hit value had anything to do with it. not having seen how the to-hit thread had ended up i don't know if we came to a consensus that to-hit affects special affects or what exactly. the to-hit value is not, however, horrendously low- it is at a .29 which could be better, but i've seen and gotten alot worse in my tinkerings.

The next idea i had (and where i am now) is that maybe some of the CU/CB things have begun to be "Stealth-patched" into live with patch 10, 11, or 12. It's not unheard of- it happened with some of what were considered minor things when we used to get patches every day, and some days we got patches without descriptions while others we just noticed that things had changed. Primarily i have wondered if something was altered so that some specials (see poison and disease) on pets that are non-ch would not stick anymore.

Has anyone else noticed this or have the poison specials been near impossible to stick from the beginning and i just never had the ability to notice?

Excellent though. I have a friend for whom I made a level 68gurreck with a to hit of about0.61 strong poison and strong disease. Almost immediately after an attack, you will see the "state" indicators on the enemy showing the poison and disease. It seems to work on all enemies, PC, NPC, and creatures. Now if only the damage from the specials looked like the damage in the wild creatures....but that is a different story.

yeah i know what state indicators to look for, but i'm not sure how to test if it's the CL or to hit...i suppose i can put a strong poison in a CL 15 or something with the same to-hit and see if it makes a difference, or _try_ to make a high to-hit non-ch pet, though that's much harder.

If anyone else knows/has a pet handy to test or tell about speak up!

if noone knows in a day or two maybe i'll check w/ the CH's and see if they know before going scouraging around endor trying to get enough strong poison creature samples to put into a pet.

I've noticed on my CL 27 Merek w/ Ranged and Strong Poison/Strong Disease that I am only succesful about 20% of the time on sticking the special. My CL 23 Razor Cat sticks his Dizzy almost 80% of the time. There is a noticeable difference between the two. I use them at the same time too and "/tellpet sp1" to both of them.

Unfortunately, I am at work right now, but I will look tomorrow at their "To Hit" values and see which one is higher. If the CL 23 has a higher "To Hit" value then we will know the "To Hit" value affects it more than CL.

At this time, I would think it has more to do with "To Hit" since my CL 23 does better than my CL 27.

It could also be that different specials stick with higher success? That sounds less likely to me. But, what do I know?

That seems pretty reasonable, and i know that specials (like dizzy for example) stick on command, whereas the poison doesn't stick, whether i call for the special or not.

My experience is that most low level BE pets have low attack speed (could be like 2.32, lower number is faster) and low to hit (such as 0.25). Poison does not work on command, so you have to be lucky for the pet to decide to use poison attack on one of those few attacks that hit the opponent. And to make things harder if used in PvP they could have a poison resist buff going.

I've never had a pet with strong poison in it, but I've had several with mild poison using the VD-NS recipe. I used to hunt with these pets as a pisoleer, and if I recall correctly poison from the pet stuck about 3-5%. I still have one of these pets in my datapad, and I'll use it a little to check and see if it still works after all these patches we've had. I know it worked at one time.

Another thought is the creatures you're having the pets go up against. I think the toughest thing I had my pet go against was perleks that have a cl lower than 20. Perhapse there's a ratio of pet CL vs. opponent CL or relative power that is used to determine the odds of poison (or disease) sticking.

heh maybe if you happen to be on when i am i'll bring my pet over for you to see and we can have 'em fight each other. I'm not sure but i'm doubtful that a CL challenge is the problem because i set it up against a player who i dont' think had more than unarmed 2 or 3 and through the entire battle the poison never stuck. i also pitted it against a few easy things on corellia, and again nothing stuck.
