In the interest of balance, in addition to the request that newbies read all the information available to them before posting I am imposing a strict NO FLAMES policy on this forum.
Think before posting. If you're tempted to flame please walk away from the thread and do not post until you are in a more calm frame of mind.
If you cant think of anything nice to say then dont post at all Ofcourse disagreements and statements of opinion are allowed but not if it means flaming another forum user.
If a newbie asks a question that could be answered by reading the FAQ, post a link to it instead of flaming.
All flames will be reported to a moderator.

Hmm I wouldn't consider suggesting someone read the FAQ stickied above as flaming.

I don't think it's about suggesting. But there are those, who don't suggest that someone reads the faq, they start being - - well, let's say rude. I won't use examples, I'm pretty sure, you know how people are.

Give us YOUR definition of flaming before you start censoring people.

If you are uncertain as to what is and isnt appropriate on the forums I suggest you re-read the forum guidelines.

My only suggestion is to be as sparing as possible with declaring something a "flame", and PM the person you have an issue with to clarify their intention and meaning first. In the recent message thread that sparked some of this policy, people had widely different interpretations of the same wording, and that caused a good bit of dissent, where they might have agreed with each other much more had the meanings been more clearly transmitted. Without the smiles, the tone of voice and the other queues we use in daily speach to inflect the meaning of our words, it is far too easy to attribute the harshest meaning to innocent phrases, and to take a prodding joke as a nasty thrust.
Asking them to reread and think about it from this or that point of view, or letting them know that they may have sounded like they meant something unkind, when they thought they were saying something else, might go a long way towards reducing the flames and making better communicators of people with valuable opinions to share.
Enforce the policy against flaming actively, but with understanding, and address the people participating directly; listening to their answers. It is necessary, but far too easy to stifle discussion, by locking threads and such. Sometimes, in our zeal for peace, we settle all too quickly for silence. Use the policy to help us remember to respect the opinions and feelings of others, and to remind us of our responsibilty to each other to hold this as open, and neutral, "Holy ground", and share it well.

Thank you. I get so tired of forums that ignore abuses and flames and trolls.

Ok now, shouldn't you have posted a link to the forum guidelines instead of just telling them to go there and read it first? lol, (cringing in the corner)
