the higher up the tree you are, the wider the survey circle..

you can get by on novice, but would take you a while to find good source

I would start with the stickies in this forum, followed up by some forum searching and actual posts with questions. What you are asking is far too broad a subject to address in a single post.

I've gotten by with novice artisan for the majority of my career, however there have been times where it literally took me hours to find a good spot .... i've also heard that there are +25 survey tapes ... yet to find one of those buggers tho

The Cult of Southern womanhood endowed her with at least 5 totally different images and asked her to be good enough to adopt all of them. She is required to be frigid, passionate, sweet, bitchy, and scatterbrained -- all at the same time. Her problems spring from the fact that she succeeds."

Ok I will make it less general (I hope). When surveying for resources is it better to have a Master Artisan then say Artisan 0-0-0-4.

Here is something you will want to think about, skill point allocation. Basically getting the most out of your skill points.

When you look at how well you can servey at 0004 vs M. A. there is little to be gained but there is a large skill point cost. So I suggest you not bother with M. A.

Most docs (not all) are a master of a fight class, master doc, and then have 18 points left over. They then move those 18 points from N. Art. so they can survey to N. Scout so they can hunt. It cost little cash to make the swap and there is no grinding so it is quick transfer. Surveying at 0001 is painful for sure but at least it is something.

I have also known guys who did not master a fight class and left them selves with enough to go up 3 boxes in a novice skill. This gave them better survey or hunting skills. It was a little harder to swich back and forth but not too hard. The surveying can be macro'ed with ease and the hunting is gained during normal hunting and does not take long.

A good prof to be a non-master in is swords. Even at non master if you get a nice speed sliced weapon you can kill any herb or avain with ease.

I suggest playing around with a character builder to see what you like.

Ok trying to avoid a general question. Is there a website that tells which creatures give herb meat, avian meat etc.
