Thread: Adv. Guide to BEs: Shame on SoE
In other words "there's your guide, now shut up".

Both Elvis and JFK are dead, along with the credibility of the Dev's that posted the Advanced BE guide...
You may want to live in a "lala" land and ignore the fact that they posted our FAQ as the "Adanced BE Guide" (along with factual errors, spelling mistakes and grammar errors), but I find it very disapponting that Keldarin wasn't allowed to at least take a look at it and fix a few things up.
And in some waysthe guidedoes more harm than good as at least the FAQ thread has comments in it that state what is wrong with some of the data that Mirrl compiled...

They didnt in any way confirm that the calcualtions were correct - they didnt even read it.
If they can be bothered to correct the spelling and grammar they certainly wouldnt have bothered correcting the information.
The fact that it was posted alone means that it's true. Do you honestly think that SoE would blatently lie to the community in a Guide, much less LucasArts allow it? Oh wait, Elvis and JFK are still alive. I forgot... Come on, pulling a stunt like that would be nearly comitting financial suicide. I could see maybe some things being off because they don't WANT to tell you those things, but not going over the entire piece of information and confirming that the process is mostly correct would be ignorant on their part. So much so that I can't believe that they would do that. If they have done that, and it is found that nothing of what TH said in that guide is true then you will see me quitting the game. But I have this feeling that TH went to the BE programmer, asked how correct the information formulated by the community was, was given an answer like "It's pretty damn close, I'd use it in the guide", and plagerised it. I see no problem with that, it is a guide after all, not a solution or a walkthrough.
Come on people, not everything is a consipiacy to get your money without giving anything back.
Albion_DeCrappa wrote:Are you honestly stupid enough to have assumed that the Adv. BE Guild was going to contain any more information then it did?
um... yes, sorry that I had such high expectations.
I really have to lower my standards. I should be happy about a compilation of FAQs that were available for month. Ah, and sorry for being so stupid.

The work that Sumo, Tal-N and the rest did on those formula for BE was awesome,
agree! It is NOT SoE who gave us ANY information about Bio-Egineer.

There's a thing called working experience. This is experience that cannot be taught in a book. It comes from wisdom not intelligence.
right... working experience and wisdom. (in this context: pure luck, frustration and boredom)
Lets see... 700 creatures, 5 different qualities per DNA sample (each with 10 different stats), 5 DNA samples per Template, experimention...
Thats a lot of working experience and wisdom.
Albion_DeCrappa wrote:
If they were to give us the entire formula there would be no working experience left in the game.
Are you talking about the formula that you liked so much? (see above)
I didn't ask for a formula though...

You know what happens then? I'd see everyone complaining about why a 2 day old Hologrinding Master BE can make the same quality pets as someone who's been in the profession for a year.
you mean like in all the other professions where you can actually control the result?

Then again, like I always say, what fun is playing a game of chess if you're given all queens and your opponent is given all pawns. But I guess you all would rather win the game then learn to play.
I like this analogy. not that it's appropriate or something...
but it's always nice to have an analogy.
You think you've got a good idea how it works and you plan your move carefuly, then the computer beeps and says 'invalid move' and you dont know why its an invalid move and in fact you've seen the computer make almost exatly the same move... and it wont explain it.... to me, thats what BE is like
but it's always nice to have an analogy.

In all the time since the BE changes, I have never had this happen to me, save critical failures. If I take 5 DNA samples of the same quality from the same creature and put them into a template and get the same experimentation results, I get pretty much the same template. The fact that you are getting different results means that you're missing something in your calculations. Keep trying, you'll figure it out.

Wow! That's patronizing! When you get off that horse let us know ok?
BTW, how many of us only use DNA from the same crature for our clones? I for one always mix DNA since I'm looking for something that you can't find in the wild. You know, the defining characteristic of the BE.

Albion_DeCrappa,
Do you mean to say that you are perfectly satisfied with SOE publishing a guide written by fans, including incorrect information, speculation, misspellings, and gramatical errors by said fans? And they'repassing it off as information that was gathered with help from fans, rather than being honest and saying that their sole source of information was the fans themselves? Are you so ignorant as to assume that, because SOE published it, it must have beenproofread and checked for factual errors? It wasn't even checked for typographical errors, let alone factual.
Iwork for a company in the gaming industry (no, I won't say which). I have a side project right now that I have to complete. Apparently there's some false information about one of our products in our internal database, and I have to research it. It's actually taking me quite some time to research, and I know I can probably go over to ign.com or gamefaqs.com and get the information from the fans, and hope it's correct. But, being honest, valuing my job, and respecting the guy who gave me the project and all, I refuse to do that, and I'm continuing to use any spare time I have (which isn't much) to research it.

While I don't like his tone or the 'tude, I do have to admit that he has a point.
And I don't have an answer to the question "what did I expect?" either. Something which gave me even a little more of a clue about how to figure out CL (even just to come a bit closer in my guesses) might have been nice, given that I'm as lazy as the next player (or perhaps I should say I'm not *quite* **edit** enough to trap all the numbers myself).
However posting our own player created FAQ and calling it "advanced" after promising us something smacks of W.C. Fields saying "Go away kid, you bother me" which is an attitude I don't need to pay monthly for, I can get that from management!
What did we expect, Mr. Crappa?
I'll tell you. We expected some concrete information from the devs about how the cloning system makes its Creature Level calculations, beyond the tentative conclusions that we'd already come to ourselves, i.e., Mirrl's guide. Why did we expect this? Several reasons:
1. They told us for months "we're working on it." What they gave us revealed that "we haven't started working on it yet" would have been more accurate. "We're working on it" set up the expectation that they were actually putting in ongoing work on it, and that it would meet the informational needs of the BE community. It didn't.
2. It was billed as an "advanced guide". What they gave us was a primer for newbies and aspiring BEs. As well as it does serve in that capacity, it was not what we had been led to expect.
3. The current fiasco with invalid pets has us unable to predict whether we'll produce a pet of the level the customer can use, and this is compounded by the fact that it is impossible to know if we've succeeded until after the transaction with the customer has been completed and they actually try to pull the pet out. No other profession in the game has this sort of lotto ticket approach. Imagine weaponsmiths trying to sell guns for which the buyer's weapon certifications might or might not apply, and with no way to know until they actually equipped it. It is on the devs' shoulders to either fix the code creating the buggy pets in the first place or else tell us how to reliably make a valid pet. This goes a good deal beyond the joy of discovery.

You like BE as it is... fine.
You like the "Advanced Guide for Bio-Engineers"... fine.
You like unpredictable results... fine.
You don't need money... fine.
You want to play for month until you clone something useful... fine.
If that's your idea of having fun... fine.
My idea of having fun is a bit more sophisticated.
