The problem is, schematics simply do not work that way due to the required ingredients. Part of their functioning checks for a valid serial number or resource name.
In order to allow templates to be turned into schematics, they need to make samples more like resources and less like individually looted components. That way every VHQ rancor sample is identical to every other VHQ rancor sample and are interchangable. (This could have the side-effect of allowing stacking, giving us our storage solution, too.)
The drawback is that there are so many creatures the DNA stats could not be varied over time like other resources. That means a schematic made now will be just as valid in a year, and the devs do not want that. They like them becoming obsolete. Perhaps one solution to that would be to limit a run to very few pets, say 10?

Even then I think I would prefer to allow the stacking for a storage solution and not the making of a schematic. I don't mind the experimenting, it is having the DNA cluttering up my lab (and inventory and backpack and two other houses...) that is the problem.

Ah, I think I understand now.
What you want is a crafting tool schematic instead of a factory schematic? Basically a very specialized DNA template? That is a very interesting idea.
