Ever tried getting a master ranger to camo you with dath camo? I have yet to try it, but its worth a shot. Make some MaskScent tissues and have a tailor craft you a set of clothing. I am attempting to make a set of +??? to maskscent. Wonder how high I can get it so the MS doesn't drop. I am going to Dath tonight to test this insane post. I got killer laughs from the descriptive comments. I will probably start crying when/if this happens to me tonight.

I have been there myself and can really feel your pain and frustration. The only thing worse than failing to get mutant rancor samples is actually getting them and watching them go poof in a critical failure. I lost 16 mutant rancor samples in about 15 minutes to critical failures. That represented about 6 hours of sampling. I guess that explains why my character is going bald.

All I can say is hang in there, it seems to get easier with practice. I can now get up to mutant rancors all the time without being aggroed. Of course I still only get one sample for every six tries. But I haven't died for awhile. Read the suggestions and figure out a method that works for you. Its worth it. I still haven't made a CL70 pet, but I'm mighty proud of my CL69 carrion spat.

I feel your pain. Aggro seems to have been turned up as of late. In responce to this i've prety much given up on rancor DNA. I can sneak up on most insect type queens and get samples with armor 30-40% kenetic resists on top of that and strong poison attacks. It may not be as good as some rancor samples but they sell just as well in CL30-40 pets. To me any master CH who knows what he is doing would take 2 cl30's 10K ham l. Armor 30% kenetic resist and 300-400 dammage over one CL 70 l.armor 60% kenetic resist and 500-700 dammage.

Hi there Unique!

You write well and I enjoyed reading your post. I can empathize with you on your experiences with Mutant Rancors. I, too have been aggroed, killed and generally disliked by them. Although they haven't deathblowed me very much lately. I sometimes wonder if their general dislike of me has to do with thatfoot long needle and thatmaniacal gleam in my eye.

I tend to not get many samples when I sample from them, but I have found some tricks to get close to them which I'll be happy to share with you and hopefully will help you.

1. First I find a location where there is only mutant rancors. If there are other kinds of rancors, I will try to either sample them first if they seem they are blocking my way or will send in a pet, since I'm also a Ch. 99% of the time willstore my bike.

2. Once I see the Mutant Rancors, I try to be aware of any other aggro around in case I have to run or in case they aggro while I am attempting a sample.

3. Then I take a fishak and usually muon gold as well as well and I find the nearest mutant and start to approach. I try to approach him either from the side or from the back, so he is facing away from me. If I am detected, I usually pause. Then depending on my distance, I will maskscent and either crawl or I will walk slowly. Once I'm in range I will start the sampling. It can take me several tries before I get a sample. If I am aggroed, at any time during this process, I will usually burst run., hitting the peace button. As soon as he turns around I rush back up to him and try to sample. If he once again aggroes, I repeat the process of running away and coming back. Sometimes as I approach closer to him, I will walk slowly, so as not to break maskscent.

4. Something I have also learned is if a mutant rancor does aggro and that sets them all to fighting. get within the 15 meter or less radius. If the combat window pops up, hit peace and it will usually go away, since the rancor is fighting with another one. I find if I do this that once the fight is over, the rancor will not usually aggro me and I can usually get several sampling tries in. The thing that is even more frustrating, is I'll finally get a successful sample and it kills the poor rancor.

I do think Mutant Rancors should be difficult to sample, but not quite as difficult as it is now. I hope that some of this helped you. I tried maskscented clothing and personally didn't see much of a difference. The rancors still seemed to break through the maskscent just as often.

Your story is so true, been there, done that soooo many times. You know the breaking mask scent and running all the time didn't really bother me that much, I can live with that. It's all the critical failures that you get when you finally get to em is what irks me!

Oh well, I'll keep trying.

I just came back from 2 hrs of mutant rancor sampling. I am MBE with mask scent 125. Getting close isn't a real problem - get off your speeder and crawl from about 80. If you ever get detected, stop dead, remask, wait a bit, keep going.

Avoiding death shouldn't be a big problem either. First, wear ubese with kickass kinetic resists.Once mutant rancors start wailing on you, they aggro each other with their AoE's. So if you burst run while spamming peace, you'll be out of there in no time. (Often the burst run isn't even necessary, but why takethe risk...)

But just in case you think I don't feel your pain, today's trip: 2 hours spent (including travel, searching), 20 sampling attempts, 20 failures. Worst trip evah. At least I got a good pike of SFB DNA.

Nice story. Sorry about the frustrations!

Well on my 2nd sampling hunt on Dathomir after making MBE, happened across several herds of Rancors that included Bull Rancors. After many sampling attempts and many "OH CRAP!!" escapes in my vehicle, I got 7 Bull Rancor DNA and several regular Rancor DNA.

I used 5 Bull Rancor DNA and the 10 experimentation pts to make the following:

CL 70 Kimogilla

Health: 12579

Action: 11861

Mind: 12004

Armor: Light

Kinetic: 35

Energy: 60

Blast: 16

Heat: 80

Cold: 80

Electric: 80

Acid: 16

Stun: 16

Attack speed: 2.02

To Hit: 0.56

Damage: 540-550

Spec2: Dizzy

So CL70 is possible from Bulls. I haven't had the fortune yet to happen across some Mutants but am looking forward to it. Nightsister Rancors are a lot of fun too! =)

I have the above on my vendor for 750K. Not sure if the price is "proper" but it is fun to look at and wish I had the desire to get MCH to use the little darling critter!

The cloning company on Dathomir must be doing hella good business, I know I have sent several of their children through college with all my clone insure time there. In addition to all the wonderful fun of failing samples and crit failing after you get them, we can't forget the Amazing success we have sending the samples over CL 70 Hey I did good, look at that Ham bar! Wait whaddaya mean it is CL 75 I only used three mutants what the #$@$! Ok it is cool, the creature is CL 75 I will just sample it from my inventory and redo it . 1 sample DIE! 3 Mutant DNA samples wasted. I have had whole days with no samples from mutants and many deaths, then suddenly I can walk up to one and get 4 samples in a row from the same Rancor. I smell inconsistancy in the air...or is that inconstanance? Anyway something smells like wet wookiee around here and I don't like it!

I couldn't help but laugh. Sorry about that. I kept imagining what your wife must have been thinking after listening to you rant and rage for 6 hours.

I went to Dath yesterday and was able to sample bull rancors with no problems. Sampled a few to death. The few that did aggro on me were taken out by the flamer in my group.

Having said that however,I had a custom order for a CL10 bol. I didn't have a lot oftime to make it so I decided to go with the tried and true cu pa scyk combo. I had scyk already and to my joy and surprise a herd of cu pa decided to make a lair right next to my lab. YAY for me...or so I thought. 6 fails in a row. On freakin cu pa!!

I took a break since my mind was tanked. I came back a few minutes later and successfully sampled the poor critters to death. Hop, skip, and a jump into my lab...critical fail on template combine twice in a row. Well no matter the cu pa are still wandering around outside. 4 out of 6 sample attempts fail. I only needed two samples anyway and I was running out of time.

To my dismay I found all the scyk DNA was used up in the first two fails. Well Bantha will work. Just intimidation instead of medium poison and it takes some finess. Crafted a gnort so I can re-sample it and make a CL10. Sample gnort...you failed to get a viable sample. Poof gnort is gone.

With thecustomer shuttling already in transit I had no choice but to make an animal using only cu pa. Low and behold I get enough DNA and craft a CL8 bol with 1800 HAM. My customer was thrilled

Of course I spared him the horror story of what I went through to make the animal.

The flip-side:

My first time out Mutant Rancor sampling I came back withabout a dozensamples in 2 hours..........

I've not managed to repeat that feat since 'the horde' moved to Dath.

Having Master scout helps (100% maskscent vs. 70%)

Having +25 Maskscent/camo clothing helps (125% maskscent)

Not having some git on a speederbike fly past helps............... (My usual Dath experience these days and the main reason I've given up trying to sample mutant rancors).

You know this was one of the reasons I mastered the scout proffession and dropped all my pistol skills.

I have Zero Fighting skills except what scout gives me.

I also tried out some ranger skills to see if the cover would help.

And sure enough I need a thing only masters can make to use the cover ability on Dathomir.....

Anywise....With my clothes I can get close and get DNA now, but the problems are still there.

It does not help that we all have a triple failure possibility(failure to use the skill, failure to get a sample and failure to get a viable sample)

So anywsie...At least we are not still doing the Shoe Tie of Death....But I do miss the infinite distance thang of getting a sample....that was funny....

Master scout is enough, you don't really need ranger. The only Ranger skills I have is Tracking, so it really doesn't help sneaking up on Mutants. Not moving when you get noticed is a good point, it'll often keep you from getting noticed until you get inside that 40m attack on notice radius. Once you get close enough to sample, you should be able to move around fairly freely. Never sample the same mutant twice in a row. Go through the group and sample each once. This will greatly reduce the chance of getting aggro'd on a sample. Remember, the chance of getting aggro'd goes up the more you sample from something. By sampling each creature once, I've been able to sample to death entire nests of Mutants without getting aggro'd.

I have Master Scout, with clothing that gives +21 to Mask. Working on making it better....But just made Master BE last night....

I have dealt with the aggro/fail so many times it isn't funny. Then I learned....(thanks to another poster on another thread) Try sneaking up BEHIND the Mutant. Have had success on the regular Rancor, Rancor Youth, Gnarled Rancor with sneaking up from behind. Prior to that, I was aggroing and failing a lot.

After I snuck up behind...I was not only not aggroing them....but seemed to succeed more.

Now I sneak up behind whatever I am sampling...Does seem to work well.

NOw I just need to understand the crafting part better.... :/ Still not coming out with anything spectacular.
