The way I do it:

a) Drive around at full speed and suddenly see large amount of scout xp spam down my screen warns me that Ive just come across a group of high level rancs. I stop, turn around and drive back at full speed if my MS didnt break, and start sampling.

If my MS did break or I am about to approach a group of mutants I have spotted on the horizon:

b) Drive up to them and stop at 70 metres. Refresh your MS if needed. Remount your speeder. Then hold shift in as you right click your mouse repeatedly making you move forward very slowly. I do this untill I see I have gotten xp from all the mutants near the one I want to sample, so I am sure I wont get a surprise in the middle of sampling. If Im detected, release shift and full throttle outta there. Remask as soon as possible and return. When I finally make it without being detected, drive up to a mutant, dismount, hit sample, and then your mount macro immidiately! You can get off, sample and back up again in 1.5 seconds or so. Dont sample without being on your bike. At least I dont, and I hardly ever die. If it aggros again, youre gonna be just fine unless it knocks you off your bike. Then youre a goner.

If the above doesnt seem to work

c) drive through the herd again and again and again, driving in circles making the pack fight internally. Stay close, but not so close that you will get stained with their AOE attacks. Keep your MS up. Sample the victor.
