I can deal with the DB's it's the 2 crit failures that really irritate me.

Anyway it sounds like it's the roll of the dice. Aturius is not a wookie, but what i find with armor is, how the heck do you put mask scent in armor, two if i use armor it takes a whack of HAM.

Three I am now 4 4 4 4 musician woohoo. Oh by the way, the saying music soothes the savage beast, It's a lie.

....and then no matter how hard we get nerfed, we still keep CH because we are still some of the coolest characters on the game.

nancy might have to try your reclusive cavern spider queen technique since I'm getting frustrated with my approach

I have 2 accounts & I send my MBE close to the cave...sign off & sign on my TKM/Master fencer...clear out the cave but run from the queen & get her outside the cave & peaced with me...sign on my MBE for the sample...no matter how long it takes me to sign my MBE back on, it is always in the same spot (1 time 15 mins due to RL stuff)...as soon as I try to sample it POOF disappears & not a warp back to the cave just flat out gone & both time in the middle of me collecting a sample...pretty angry to say the least after spending time getting my other character buffed & there then clearing out the whole place

I always go with the get buffed, peace and leg it down to the bottom, get incapped at here feet and when you're up you're ready to sample, though I havent tried it since the DB and force power changes.

Well, maybe you all aren't sharpening your needles or something...

I have never been killed by a Mutant Rancor when trying to sample DNA. (Actually trying to kill them...That is a different story!)

Here's what I have always done:

1) Get buffed, duh.

2) Wear armor.

3) Wear the best Scent Neutralizing clothing you can. I am a Wookie, so this SUCKS for me. I can only wear a shoulder pad: Lower scent bonus and I CAN'T wear my armor chest plate! (If you are a wookie, drag your scent mask shoulder pad and your armor chest plate up to 2 open slots on your bar. That way you can switch between them quickly.)

4) Use a pet mount. Giant Carrion Spat is supposedly the fastest mount in the game. Swoops are nice, but they don't automatically follow you around! Always nice to have your mount within 10m of you when your target macros. (You can also use it as a sacrificial lamb, too. Tell it to attack and you /peace and run.) Group with your mount.

5) When you spot your target stop 100m out. Get off your mount and toggle your scent mask off/on to start the timer anew. Get back on and ride up to 60m out. Then hold the shift key and make your pet WALK up to sampling range, 15m. If it detects you on the way in, just head back out to 100m and wait until you can scentmask again.

6) Dismount, sample, remount....Then wait...You will either get a sample, fail, or get aggro'd...usually the latter of course! Since you are already ON your mount, just run away. If you can't get away fast enough /gallop.

7) Wait for it to cease its pursuit and start all over again.

I usually get a successful sample 1 in 4 tries with MRs.

Another note: I see that a lot of you who crawl up to your target, stand, sample, and go back to prone. This is not neccessary. Yes, it does say that you can't sample while prone. But you CAN sample from prone IF YOU ARE MOVING. When you are up near your target just hit your movement key for a sec while you press your sample key. Presto!

Hope this helps some of you,

I dont die often from MR sampling even tho usually dont bother buffing but come on now "1 in 4"...I've done 20 in a row with getting no sample...either you're new & have been lucky OR you are sporting some magic needle

For me it averages 1 in 5 orless overall- but that streaky random number generator can easily give me 20 fails in a row or 5 successes in a row depending on how it feels!

Bear in mind also the "creature state" (? and \!/, whether it is lying down, sitting or ambling) has a big effect on sampling success which in turn is affected by your maskscent. Perhaps me having an effective maskscent of 142+ makes a difference to sampling?

It sure as heck makes a difference on "the approach" (no remask delay) and I've noticed it also affects "lock on" range for aggros and additional aggros big time (usually maskscent isn't broken by a sampling aggro, so I seem to get just the one MR complaining about the sore butt).

I suspect there are a lot more factors affecting sampling success than simple progression up the sampling tree, albeit them being indirect from creature state and the like.

Thiscould mean that your "technique" can have a major effect on sampling success - 1 in 4 sounds about right to me, so I suspect I'm doing something right (now if I can only figure out what it is...........)

Goes away and thinks about it:

Got it. I suspect my own success is mainly down to that OTT maskscent I have. Itdoesn't break as muchon approach with me being a ranger/+25 BE clothing/+18 Jawa beer drinker, than for most others.

Whenyou get the "creature detects you message" one thing that happens is that the creature goes "on alert". If it is sitting or lying down it standsup and gets "?", subsequently the creature will start ambling about to patrol or check out the herbivores in the next lair over and won't sit back down.

Consequently, with fewer maskscentbreakages, I'm tending to sample more often from MRs that are sitting or lying down - greater chance of a successful sample and if it does fail chances are it'll just stand up rather than try and stomp me.

/points finger to tip of nose....

Yes, high scent mask and the creature's current state are KEY for the big nasties.

That mega scent bonus sure does help, but you can do it with less. With limited Scout skills and very limited Wookie-wearable scent mask bio-clothing my scent mask bonus is only +86. You CAN approach anything in the game with this. When I first got MBE and didn't know any better I decided to try to sample a Krayt (/looks with hindsight, /bonks self in head). It took me dozens of tries and 2 deaths, but I DID manage to sneak up behind one once and attempt to sample. Of course I was sorely dissapointed to see the message that said I coulnd't, DOH.

Use common sense here on the big nasties: If it is lying down when you approach and then stands up, just wait a second and it will lay down again. Don't just charge up to it. If you sample and get a "?" or "!" don't sample again right away. Remask scent and wait a sec for it to calm down. The calmer the creature is, the better your chance is going to be to get away with a sample.

I've come to learn that 'Armor Pants' aren't as necessary for PVE, try using Maskscent Pants (as well as your Maskscent undershirt) instead of Composite leggings - it's keeping me out of the clone center now. Been over a month since I visited one. The +25 Maskscent is pretty much a necessity for us if we're not Rangers anyway.

My sample success rate does seem to be higher as well now....

If you get in a battle and start taking too much damage - just hotkey your Leggings and pop em on fairly quickly, but most animals hit upper body, not your legs.

NPCs are the ones who like to rip your legs off.

First rule:

Never sample mutant rancors closer than 12m away! max i think is 16m before you loose the sample? Correct me if i'am wrong. And remember to jump back on after you hit the sample icon! it's always good to be ready to fly if you get hostiled,Also it save you from hitting peace alot,And getting a round or kick off on the specimen

Second rule:

Always use a swoop! I used to use my x34 landspeeder? My get aways were not as fast as i needed.

3rd rule:

Stay close to you speeder and practise getting on it and off it fast!

I have used these rules above all the time and I dont die that much,I think alot of bio-engineers walk to far away from there only escape the trusty speeder.Stay closeand always mount it after sample.

You can also tame a creature and jump on the bike also.

I've given up on trying to do MR's even if I get a sample, I've never been able to successfully use it. They ALWAYS crit fail for me. So, after hours of screwing around to get a few samples, I lose them. It seems like the devs don't want you to make creatures with this DNA.
