Crits will always exist. But if we get FS crafting and use that cake, they will be less likely to happen.

The cake is not supposed to affect experimentation, Bespin port is for that, it is supposed to affect assembly, so yes, crit fails would be the best measure of that. I really don't think there is a reasonable way of knowing empirically whether it is in fact working or not, since it would take a huge number of combines (500? 1000? I dunno, I'm no statistician)to get meaningful numbers. Perhaps it displays something in the skill mod list though?

I did a crafting session of about 10 or 12 cobines last night for pets. I used the cake for each one, I didn't get any crits, but I don't think the cake affects that, and I did notice a I got more great and amazing successes than I think I normally would. Also didn't get a single moderate success either.
This wasn't a scientific experiment btw. Just a 'feel' for what was happening.

It displays in the 'buff' window up until you do a ocombine. Then it disappears. Before pub 10 it never disappeared after a combine.

Verifying it would be difficult.
My friend bought the Force Experimentation and Assembly lines with his two unlocks. He has been a master Weaponsmith for as long as I can remember and he said the difference with both of those was nominal. He saw less moderate successes, but his products were still coming out about the same.
I imagine where the difference will be is it is slightly easier to get the assembly that bumps your maximums up a few percentage points. You won't get it every time, and as Arthur suggested, you would probably have to make hundreds or thousands of attempts. Considering the already random nature of pets, it is nearly impossible to "feel".

don't forget that a failure in the cloning process (NOT a crit fail) can sometimes be a HUGE advantage. if I could fail on demand, I'm sure I'd be making better pets.
stupid baffling cloning system. stupid me for trying to cram the dark arithmetic into my brain.
the black math! it burns!
...gothmatician, Test Center. Lovecraft would be proud.

yeah I sometimes love it when I fail during an experiment on physique where the fortitude goes up but the hardiness goes down. Makes for some nice lower level armored pets

Things like pyollian cake are 1 shot items, you get a bonus for the next combine. Previously we didnt lose this affect on the combine because our crafting bypassed the normal crafting code for DNA templates (not skins though) Now the affect goes away when we combine the DNA template.
NancyJ? shouldn't you be off on blue glowie island? what's with just being a "pilot"? pfft...
Go take your vacation! =D
