Ok, but, I'm not sure what the hullabaloo is about getting MR's. Bull rancors are much easier to get and they'll provide a sweet CL70 if that's what you're after.
Bull rancor dna is much easier to get, very true, and you can make a CL 70 critter just with 5x bull rancor dna, also true.
But to me probably the two most important things to look at in a pet (or an animal) are effective HAMvs kinetic, and damage per second.
Mutant Rancor: 50k HAM against kinetic 245 dps
Bull Rancor: 37k HAM against kinetic 186dps
It's really no contest actually. I consider bull rancor dna to be fairly useless. I used to get a lot of it, and I never did find a recipe when using it that I was happy with.
Mutant Rancor... there is no substitute, hehe

A master scout with BE clothing and excellent jawa beer can walk up to a group of mutants pretty successfully. Unfortunetly anything less than that and it ain't happening with anything that resembles easy. Basically either you are a master scout, very determined or simpling making animals without that DNA.

also bull rancors dont have those lovely 100% resistances' which make it seem a lot more evil than the other pets. im yet to use bull rancor dna, im gonna go get some and see what evil little durni i can make out of it.

I've heard, but never tried, that a Dath Camo kit is worst than mask scent.

Im not master scout, i can walk up on a mutant rancor fine. Go from his back, get to 40m pop a jawa(or as i call them my woot beer), then wait for my scent to break. Then i remask and move in for the sample. Thats with 1 rancor. Most ive EVER snuck up on was 5, and 4 were all in 1 little group. The 5th was standing about 20m from them so he is the one i picked to sample. I tried twice both failed and i was then detected. But sneaking up on 1 is fairly easy. Especialy if he spawns 15m from you. Whats gonna be fun is sampling after the combat revamp, Not a whole lot of people going to be able to protect you. Best have your bike out and ready. I have yet to have my bike attacked by mutant rancors, but those rancor youth....lol.

I went out yesterday for my first DNA collecting session since reaching MBE. With BE Clothing and Jawa Beer my Mask scent reached only 101. I found a group of 6 mutant rancors and after 3 attempts I was able to approach them. I manage to get about 10 samples from this group before they all died at the point of my needle.
Not bad considering they are suppose to be difficult. The only difficult thing is finding them. After that group I didn't see anymore during the next 2 hours. Lots of enraged (which I avoided) and youth/normal rancor groups (from which a number of youth samples were extracted) but no more mutants.
The next highlight was making some pets from the mutant/youth dna samples. Everything went well until I discovered I'd made a CL77 and a CL78 creature. Oh well, live and learn.
On the subject of learning, where did I go wrong? Should I have not used a Rancor skin for the pets or did to over experiment on the template to result in such high CL's that appeared to be unusable/unsampleable?

The only difference the skin makes to the final CL is its minimum level (check the FAQ to see the level restrictions). The way it seems to me is that you used too many MR DNA in one template. Using more than 2 per template can often lead to >CL 70's and unless you use some really junky DNA, you will see that 3 or 4 samples will definately push it over the CH limit. Nice combos are MR-RY-RY-RY-MR or MR-MCC-MCC-MCC-MR. Experiment with different mixes and see what you like. If you can get a pet to hit exactly CL70 then you're in the money

Well, I haven't sampled MR for about 2 weeks, so this post makes me wanna try again. I had a special order for 2 high level pets and was dreading going out and getting the MR dna. Previously, my best was getting 3 samples in about 3 hours before getting frustrated and doing something else. Unfortunately, sitting in one location for 3 hours and constantly failing grates on my nerves really badly, so I can only muster up the nerve to do it when I have to. This time, things were different...
I used a system similar to Washel's, but indtead of using a pet, I just hit the peace command and let the MR chase me for a while. When he gives up, if he doesn't warp away into the void, you can run (yes, I said run) up to him and hit him with a sample. Of course, if the sample fails multiple times, you get to run again, but hey no one said this was gonna be easy. However, this way took me forever to get 3 samples. However, my luck was about to change...
I was tooling around in my landspeeder and saw some red dots on the radar. I couldn't get a target, so I got out of the speeder and looked at the ground and tabbed to get a target. Sure enough, down a steep slope from me were 6 MR. I quickly drank my Jawa Beer to give me my stunning 86% mask scent and went prone. I crawled down the hill and the Rancor never sensed me even once. I did this once before when I was first a master (sneaking down a hill) and was never aggroed, even with Rancor looking right at me(maybe there is somethng to sneaking down... never seems to work going up hill). Anyway, I snuck down to within 5 meters of one, 10 of another and 11 of still another. I proceeded to sample them.
I found out something throught a little experimentation. When you start to sample these guys, move your camera angle out as far as it can go so you can see if the Rancor gets a question mark or exclaimation over their heads. If they do, or if they are laying/sitting and suddenly stand, DO NOT sample them right away. they are in a more alert state and if you fail they will more than likely attack. Wait 30 seconds (you can probably do it in 20) and then sample them again. They will usually calm down/sit back down/lay back down in that time period. Being careful like this, I managed to get 8 samples from the six Rancor that were down the hill. As the last one fell, another Mutie spawned 20 meters away. I crawled up to him from behind and got another sample. Counting from the time I started dowm the hill (which is when I consider the sampling time to begin) until I had to leave the spawn due to RL concerns, I harvested 15 samples in about 40 minutes.
Well, I don't know if there is any creedance to my little theory that sneaking down a hill is easier. It's probably just coincidence, but I'm positive that if you pay attention the the Rancor that you are sampling, at least 75% of the time they broadcast when they are alert and looking to tear your head off, especially if youare beyond your first sampling try onthe same MR. Of course, you will still get the ones which attack you when you crawl within 45 meters and not even break your mask scent, but such is they way of things...
