The xp you get from resources while crafting? You get more the higher the bar next to the slots yes?
The xp you gain from crafting an item depends only on the type of item you're making. You can make a crafting tool with 1000 Conductivity copper, experiment up the effectiveness as much as you want, and still gain the same amount of xp as a tool made with 5 Conductivity metal with no experimentation.
The amount of xp earned is usually equal to two times the number of resources used. So crafting tools require 34 units of resources (16 metal + 10 chem + 8 mineral) and earns you 68xp. If you click the box for "practice mode" on the final crafting step (the window where you set the name), the item does not get created in your inventory, and you get a 5% xp bonus (71 or 72 xp).

Hey guys, i finally got the forums to work... but anyhow what are some good resources to grind Weaponsmith on i just made novice and have all the requirements to make that strange pistol and the c12 frag grenades although i do not have any reactive gas... so i thought i'd just get a harvestor and get some but when i used the tool it showed no list of the types of gases on the planet so i destroyed and made another.. so im guessing im not a high enough survey level or its bugged...

Your surveying exp and harvestors have nothing to do with what resources you can see. Not all resources spawn at the same time. You may have to wait a while for something. Nor do they spawn on every planet. Some resources only spawn on one planet. Check out swgcraft.com. They have list of the current resources available per planet.

Also make sure your using the right survey tool, you'll need a gas survey tool to find gasses.
As far as what resources to grind with, that all depends on what your going to make. A popular item to grind is heavy warheads, but they take some very specific resources.
Also a reccomendation : Make yourself a list of all the resources your going to need, and the qualities that are important (i.e. conductivity, shock resist, overall quality, etc.) and start watching for those, your going to need them later on so you might want to start getting them now.
www.swgcraft.com is a good site for seeing what resources are currently available, there's also a schematic section you can use to see what resources you'll need for particular items.
Good luck, and welcome to the weaponsmith profession.
