I don't doubt that there is a 'working hard cap', but I still hold out hope that this cap is based on a rapidly diminishing % chance of success, rather than some CL level that the devs capped us on.
as an example, though seemingly far-fetched... trapping. traps won't affect high CL mobs, but the actual CL cap of trap effectiveness has never, to my knowledge, been determined.
part of the problem here is the lack of a linear progression in CL's... mutant rancors are CL75, and the next entry on swgcreatures.com is at CL80. then, from CL80-90, there are 7 mobs ingame. from CL90-102, there are 3. 103-122? 3 more. after that it ramps up sharply.
if we're looking at a choice between possible success at CL75, and no chances at a CL76 to test ourselves against, and failure at CL80+... we're not looking at a good dataset.
about the only way to determine this 'CL75 cap', which I'm not disputing as a de facto limit, but rather as a hard numerical cap on sampling, we need to start making CL76 clones in quantity and trying to sample them. since no wild donors exist in this range, this seems to be the only viable option, and not a very rewarding one.
