Also don't make the mistake of putting a container of resources in the hopper, such as a packpack filled with your steel.. The factory won't read the container contents.

factories can hold 100 items in input hopper whether they are stacks of resources, crated components or food or any other item
so if you planning to keep the factory up forever and you running out of storgae space in house/s then you can use the hoppers as additional storage space

I tend to use Radioactives to power my harvestors and factories, I'd suggest buying a Fusion-ion and survey for a good spot to harvest.
Failing that wind energy is cheap and you should be able to find some on the bazaar.
What is the exact power type are you trying to use in the Factory?

Radioactive works, butUnknown Liquid Petrochem Fuel, Known Solid Petrochem Fuel, Class 4 Solid Petro Fuel, and Methane Reactive Gas do not. Go figure. Anyone have a guide on this?

Far as i know, fusion, wind, and solar are the only ones that work, fusion will last the longest as you get "more bang for your buck"

Yep, forget all the "fuels" and whatnot out there. There are only three resources that can be used to power harvesters and factories.
Solar is next to useless. Sure, the harvesters look cool, but the cost of running one versus the amount of usable energy that you get out is prohibitive (okay, so I haven't done the numbers myself, but I got that from a resource magnate friend who likes to squeeze every last credit out of each unit of resource). Big problems finding high concentrations of the stuff, too.
Same goes for wind.
Radioactive power is the way to go. You can harvest it with a mineral harvester, but that's inefficient. Heavy Mineral Miners cap at a BER of 13 and require energy to operate. Fusion Generators cap at 14BER and only require credits (tho have a higher maintenance rate, to be fair). Plus, you can find concentrations of it as high as any other mineral resource (95%+) where wind and solar tend to cap around 50% or so.
The primary advantage to Radio is that you can get more than one POWER unit per ORE unit. This is determined by the PE of the resource. For every 1k of radio ore you have, you get 2xPE power out of it. EG. if your radio has a PE of 850, then a 1k block of it will give you 1700 power units. Radioactive gives you more, er, bang for your buck. Because of this, you want to keep an eye out for Class 6 and Class 7 Radioactive to appear on your server (they tend to have the highest PEs), then harvest the daylights out of it. Keep an eye on the High Grade Polymetric as well -- since it's a post-JTL resource, it's not gated.
