Thread: ranged damage revisited

Hi folks,

Just wanted to share some additional research. A few months back I was trying to figure out what type of damage wild creatures did when they attacked with ranged attacks. I think I now have an answer: I'm almost certain it is energy

It's obvious that it isn't kinetic, and when we asked Thunderheart he said something to the effect that different creatures attack with different forms of damage (which I'm not convinced of).A few months back I made some 100% acid resist and 100% electrical resist pets, and they still got owned by perlaks and anglers. Last night I was hunting spineflaps (soldiers and guards mainly) and was using a pet with:

light armor

kinetic: 58%

energy: vuln

blast: 1%

heat: 1%

cold: 1%

acid: 1%

electric: vuln

stun: vuln

light saber: vuln

when I had the pet attack a soldier 1-1 it was getting hit for 16-36 points. When I sent it to attack a pack of 3 soldiers/guards though, the ranged attacks were hitting it for 190-270 points of damage. Which tells me that the ranged attacks are either energy, electricity, or stun. More testing to come.

You specified wild creatures... Do tamed and/or BE pets not have that advantage?

So they spit the rocks from their gizzards?

I moved to Corellia I have no vendor and I don't know the coords to my house, but it doesn't really matter cause all my pets are in the tool box, I may have some in space, but that doesn't really concern you either.

next test:

light armor

kinetic 39%

energy 56%

blast: vul

heat: vul

cold: vul

electr: vul

acid: 2

stun: vul

ls: vul

I suck this pet on a pack of 4 spineflap soldiers and no hits on it were above 40 or so, whether ranged or melee. So I can say, with confidence, that at least in the case of spineflap soldiers/guards, they do energy damage with their ranged attack.

The more I think about it, the more sense this makes too. It may be part of the reason why energy is given such a high contribution to CL, and also explains why it is capped. I'm dissappointed, because I envisioned building a near-100% "ranged resistant" pet, which aint gonna happen now, but at least I know what's going on now. I think I'll also start concentrating on making more pets with higher energy resist now. I'll tell ya, all it takes is sending your CL 25+ pet against a few CL 14-16 level creatures, and seeing it get ripped apart, before you realize that maybe a little energy resist isn't such a bad thing to trade off against some of that extra HAM you almost never need

Ofcourse to prove TH wrong you'd have to find out the ranged damage type of a lot more creatures

Yea, over time I will test some other creatures with this combo of pets I have. Such testing is pretty easy. But then again, I guess the engineer in me doesn't feel the need for much more testing. You know the old joke. What's the difference between a Mathematician and an Engineer? Mathematicians see a few experimental results and feel the need to prove their theoryfor all cases. And if they can't the whole thing is worthless. An engineer sees a few experimental results, provestheirtheory for one case, and assumes it's true for all cases, lol...well...I'm an engineer

Should not be hard to test on Mereks. Poison may look to be a problem, but if you pick TMBs they are strong poison and always tick 110. Or maybe on some arachnes.

By the way, what ranged damage do Droidekas do? I suspect it may be energy or heat.

I find this very interesting. Does the type of damage...ie, "Energy"... decide what kind of "state"...ie, Stun, Dizzy, Blind...the creature will land? Or...is this purely attributed to the pets inherent specials, reguardless of the damage type?

Reason for question....

If you have ever had the pleasure of DNA sampling Dragonets on Tatooine, thenonemaybe all too familiar with thenasty ranged attack that will land a"Dizzy" state on the best of combat templates.

Intuition tells me it is just certain specials forparticular creatures with rangedattacks. Confirm?

Any special hitting at range is the same specials that hit in melee.

LoL...I guess I never stood around long enough to get a melee attack....12-15m....unmount....DNA sample and target vehicle...

Thanks Seiryuu. That makes perfect sense.

Droidekas are considered npcs, and to my understanding the type of damage they deal is determined randomly. Watch for the color of the beams that they shot, that will tell you which type of damage it is.
