If you're having this problem with agressive creatures (hence why you dont want to get upclose), I've found walking to exactly 15m, hitting sample, then getting closer really helps. Usually to like 3, 4m. Then if they start walking at the end of the sample, you've got about 10m of space to work with. Thats my rancor technique

Time after time, Ive started sampling somthing, just to have it run off RIGHT as Im nearly done collecting the sample.
Im here to say: Why the **** do BE's need to come into close range? Isnt this game supposed to be placed in an advanced timezone? I mean, can they notmake some projectile rifle, insert the dart, attach a string... Shoot, pull string and your done? Just an observation

Right.... about that.... Ehm.. well,ok.. I will rephrase it... Any game in a time with Laser weapons, jet packs, space travel... bla bla... should be able to attach a bloody string to a needle

The reason they need to come into range is becasue of the same idiot logic that the developers think that a player causing 10,000 damage is wrong, but its ok to make a dathomire council memebr shoot you for this much in one shot.
The same logic that says that creature pets where too powerful so they scaled them down, so now a creature in the wild is almost 100 times stronger then a taimed version or a bio-engineered one of the same level.
The same logic that makes rifles the same range as a pistol or carbine or rocket launcher.
The same logic that heavy weapons are weaker then some idiot light saber....sorry but i watched the novies and read the books i know for a fact explosives where not blocked by a lightsaber or jedi.
Anywise thats the reason you dont have a range...make no qualms about it...some balancing experts dont know anything about game balance...and instead they do idiot things.....just be thankful you dont still do he shoe tie animation of death.
But then that was only bad when they impossed the idiot low range penalty.

Use this macro, it will hopefully help :
/follow;
/sampledna;
all you need do is target your creature then click the macro on your toolbar and it ensures you follow the pesky little blighter while youre sampling. Hope this is of help to you.

This works for most things, but the problem some people have is when they get agro, you have to first stop following, *then* start running away, and that half second is enough for a Rancor to eat you.
