A new year and well... I was kinda missing having a crafting game to play so I'm back. Its been over 9 months since I left now, I look around the Bio-engineer forum and see that nothing has really changed. However my view on life has changed since getting married and now with a baby on the way in February something made me want to come back and simple enjoy the star wars universe a bit. Its sad to see my once favourite profession that I attempted to nurture all the way from its beta stage as one of the few dozen bio-engineers that existed back then however I hope that with the space expansion well and truely behind them the focus will come back to making SWG what it always should have been.
I see some familar faces here, as well as some not so familar. However I just wanted to post something to say.. I'm Back and you can find me on Ahazi. (plus I'll be collecting a few favours from the people I gave my possessions and millions of credits to when I cancelled my account
)

Oddly enough its thanks to the fact Anarchy Online is now totally free from subscription for a whole year. So I figured, why not. It would be nice to see a truely matured MMO and since its free.... Well, let me say that I was not impressed with the crafting system at all. I had a go at it but overall it seemed very limited. I started to think about the SWG days and how it was nice to actually have a player economy going on. I have been off playing City of Heroes which has a fantastic combat system that totally overshadows that of SWG however sometimes its nice to actually make something and see another player enjoy it.
So if I want my action fix I'm playing City of Heroes. If I fancy some exploration and crafting its SWG for me. Lets hope the devs get more done in 2005 than they did in 2004.

Just out of curiousity, are you the same Tal-N who played Black and White and frequented the forums of Planet Black and White?

Yes I'm the same Tal-N from Black&White that wrote the CREED guide. And the same one from the Half-Life editing community, and the one from City of Heroes forum. And the one from Vlatitude.com. And the one over at Neopets. And from the VERC...
..lets just say I've been active in a few communities over the years

Yeah its kinda nice to be back, the frame rate issues still seem to be as crippling as ever. Despite the fact I can run even the most recent games to a good standard its shocking that I still suffer frame rates below the double figure numbers around cities and instances where the game locks up completely for at leasta minute simply because I opened the crafting window or datapad. Its those things which I really hated back then and annoys me even more now having seen that it doesn't happen with other MMOs ive played.
I'm shocked that these fundamental things are still happening and its making me question coming back in the first place.

Welcome back Tal-N. It is great to see you back.
You are correct that not much has changed overall. Most of the issues are either still the same or the same again.
The frame rate issue improved significantly until the release of JTL. Now it is a problem again. For some of us, client-side lag, even on good machines with fast connections, has almost made the inventory screens unusable. While zooming in and looking at the ground, and making the icons as huge as possible and the window as small as possible all help, changing graphics detail, sound, etc. don't.
I haven't played yet today, though. There is a client-side lag fix, so we will see.
Other issues include the CURB (Combat Upgrade/Revamp/Balance) and its effect on our profession and the economy as a whole, and the hiring of 20 new developers, which seems to be putting a new face on things at the moment. Whether it represents deep changes or merely a new face remains to be seen, but I'm hopeful.
Oh, and since you were gone, the hologrind was destroyed in a big happy bonfire. The force-sensitive progression that replaced it is an improvement over the hologrind, but it still could use a little work.
On the forum side, Talthazar stepped down due to time conflicts. NancyJ replaced him and did a great job, but stepped down in response to upcoming correspondent term limitations and the desire to keep only one correspondent through the CURB for continuity, and ArthurDentOnBria replaced her and has done a wonderful job so far.
Apart from that, it still rains on Dathomir, BE's are still trying to set cloning stations as their primary residence, and level 10 pets are still controversial. Some things never change.
Welcome back!
We missed you!

Hands down SWG is the laggiest game I've played. We still slide across the floor, pets still auto-store, animals still warp and poof, and you can still run to a mission only to find a glowy waypoint and nothing else.
Some things never change.

Welcome back Tal-N!
I'm already looking forward to your posts.
On the frame rate thing, I had the same thing happen to me. You may want to check HDD access speed. When I got a much faster drive, my frame rate shot up from 15-16 to 28-30. No other changes were made on the system.

Welcome back
You haven't missed a whole lot as far as BE is concerned. It is still the most involved crafting class in the game which is the real charm behind the profession.
You'll see the same "uber" CL10 issues, chef tissue issues, pricing issues, etc...that you saw when you left.
CoH is fun. It's very linear and doesn't involve a lot of thinking which can be nice in a video game. I also enjoy the liquidity of grouping. A player can get involved in a multitude of groups, attacking various mob types,in just one play session.
I've never play Anarchy online but I have a friend that did for a short time. He didn't like it a whole lot. WoW doesn't interest me. Don't ask me why.
I've played EQ2 off and on. Its fun but it is about as linear as CoH and can be just as mindless in many ways. I enjoy the EQ2crafting which CoH does not have at all.
In the end nothing really compares to bio-engineering in SWG. I just wish there was other in-game content that was instanced, didn't involve camping, and was interactive. Here's to hoping.
Again, welcome back.

Ahh yes, the endless poking of the PBnW forums. I think its amazing that the Halls of Valhalla went from being a one thing to becoming a place for fan fiction and artwork. Nevermind, its still a benefit to the community.Anyway thanks for the warm welcome back all of you, at the moment I'm trying to decide what I want to do with my bio-engineer. Thinking of maybe joining a guild so I have some purpose. Also started a droid engineer on sunrunner since I'm hoping that the devs finally add the Droid Commander profession they were talking about last year.
Gimme some combat droids to make and I'll be happy
