I was glancing through my Star Wars Guide to Weapons and Technology and I found an interesting piece of machinery that would really help artisan and crafting classes.
The Laser Drill...
This hovering platform is controlled by a single person (think of it as similar to the Episode 1 Battle Droid speeders), and has a laser projecting device at the base of it. The drill is used to dig underground and reach hard to reach materials, like metals, stone, gems, and other deposits.
In SWG, I could see the Laser Drill as an tool that can be used to enhance Surveying and Sampling. The drill can increase personal sampling rates and survey distances, without using a harvester. Instead of needing a certain material, plopping down a harvester and waiting a day or so for a useable amount, you could call your laser drill out, add some energy to run it, survey the area, find a slightly hard to reach deposit, and activate your laser drill. Graphically, a beam shoots from the base of the drill and allows you to acquire the deposit, maybe giving the user an amount larger than the highest normal sampling rate.
Just an idea, think about it.

That is a great ideal. A laser platform that can drill where normally you can not put down a harvester. The trade off is, you have to be there to extact the sample verses placing a harvester and leaving and doing something else.
