Thread: Surveying, how to work more efficiently?

Hello everyone,

Recently I opened up a 2nd account to create a supporting character for my bounty hunter. I did not intend to make a master artisan, but simply engineering IV and Surveying IV. However, I had so much fun and it went so quickly that I decided to just try and see how i like it. Having my own shop and being able to make components I am going to need for my DE it seems to be a great choice.

My only issue is with surveying. I have been searching several hours for a decent patch to only end up in a no build area. I can understand if there are too many hills, mountains and etc, but it actually was pretty flat. Yet I couldn't build. Are there other things to look for when trying to place a harvestor?

How useful can the map (ctrl v) be when surveying? Anything I'm missing there?

Also, as for starting to survey I kind of tried to avoid the big cities. To my surprise however, the good spots are usually around or near the bigger city. Is this coincedence?

What can I do to optimize my surveying? I go to a city or player town, I head to one direction, like north or south and once I get the "you've left bla bla city" I dismount and hit survey. I follow up on the leads I get, if I don't find a nice spot I head back to town and pick a different direction. Its very time consuming, and wonder what I can do to make it more efficient.

Last question: What would you consider still a valid spot to harvest? I seem to be happy with a 50+% if I cannot find anything else. Is this unwise and should I just try to geta better spot elsewhere?

Thanks for your time

(ps. Is it harvestor or harvester?)

Many times, the vein you find outside a city is not the only one. Even if the percentage drops down to zero as you move away from it. There are usually deposits all over the planet that vary in percentages, it just depends on how patient you are with going far and surveying often. Most good deposits (70%+) will be no closer than 3km from a city. Don't let the distance keep you down.

Once you find a good spot, fill it with power and cash, turn it on and leave it alone for a few days. One of my happiest moments was to come back to my flora farm after about 3 days and find 47k of fungi in it.

I normally start at my house, which is about 1500m from Theed and head east from there, because I know it is fairly flat land and away from any large cities. If a lead turns out to be too low a concentration, I use "set name" and name it the % and the resource. That way I know to avoid that area on future leads, and I can come back to it if I don't find anything better. Then I hop back in my Landspeeder (cheaper to keep out for a long time) and go at least 1000m more before I survey again.

What concentration I am willing to settle for depends on a number of factors. I give "bonus points" to a concentration that is close to my house, or to another harvester I already have down. That means I'll probably take a 70% concentration there. For some resources like Water, I may take as low as 50%. But normally I like 75% and up. It's really great when you stumble on a 93% concentration when you are just about to give up!

I wouldn't back track, that's a waste of time. If you want to try to stay near a city, then circle around it. But the best concentrations are normally out in the middle of nowhere!

There is only one thing I would note about this. If you are going to leave it alone for a few days, make sure that you at least open your surveying tool in the days between, to see that the resource you are harvesting has not shifted out. Otherwise, you may leave it alone for a few days to find that it has not been harvesting anything for you because the resource is no longer there.

I am also pretty new. The other thing I have started doing, as the posted above mentioned, is renaming the wp for my harvesters to add the name of the resource and the % concentration. It makes it easier to keep track of.

Thanks for the replies everyone, and some of the tips I already have been able to use in the game. I found myself going in circles a few times (eventhough I started on the other side of town), but adding a wp with that low percentage helped me prevent making that same mistake. I also liked the renaming of the waypoints so I can more easily keep track of the resources.

And yes, some shifts occur quickly I noticed. Only two days ago there was a shift and I placed my harvestors and this morning it shifted again.

Tho still the "cannot build here" part of surveying is very annoying. If anyone has any tips on this please let me know.

There really not much you can do about this. Usually most of the really good percentage spots are in no build zones. What they are is the area around a POI usually. You asked before about using the world map....well thats a good tool to help you. If you open that and turn on the POIs you will get a better picture of where you should be looking for resources. Also if the percentage is high enough i will move out to a lower percentage and see if ive left the NBZ. As long as the percentage doesnt drop by more than 10 ill still place the harvey right on the boundary of the NBZ.

Lairs will also screw up placements. If you go to that overhead view and see a bunch of yellow squares and theres no other harvesters nearby theres a lair. Blow it up and try again.

As far as percentages. Ore Im usually happy with 40% and with metals 60%. Im pretty impatient.

For Water and Ore, I'm happy with anything over 50%.

For anything else, I wait until I get at least 70%, and shoot for 80% if I can get it.

Also, surveying is much easier if you make a macro to survey from your vehicle.
