Thread: I think I may be an idiot
I've taken and quit about 20 or so survey missions because I never seem to be able to figure out what mineral I need to get. I know that there have been some bugs but whenever I accept a mission and review it in my data padthere's no information about what I'm looking for. Figuring that perhaps it's just a generic mineral that is needed I've tried sampling any old mineral that's in line with the job, i.e. hey I need some ore for my xyz project, with no luck.
What am I doing wrong?
The problem is the mission never tells me what to look for at all!
Click on Mission Details (button in the Mission browser, or default radial menu option in your Datapad icon for the mission once you have accepted it). In the upper left corner you should see "Resource: metal" or something like that. In the same box as the percentage needed is. For low level Survey missions there are only three types: metal, ore and gas. Any of them will do; if you pick up a Metal mission, just survey for any metal that is abundant in the zone. The moment you hit /survey in a spot >= the needed %, you have completed the mission. You don't even have to sample.
Keep in mind that:
- You need to be 1024 meters away from the mission terminal. If you find a suitable spot that is closer, a message will pop up and tell you.
- As you may know, for the first few hours after a resource first appears on a planet you cannot hand-sample it. This also seems to affect Survey missions: if you are surveying for a new metal, even though you are in a 99% spot 5000 meters away from the terminal, you won't complete the mission, and you won't get any message telling you what's wrong. If that happens to you, just try a different resource.

As you are browsing missions, double-click on the title and it will show the resource it needs and the density. Once you have accepted the mission, you can see these details by selecting "Details" from the radial menu in the mission datapad entry.
Some general tips on running survey missions:
- Survey missions are a great way to safely and quickly earn credits - with a good weapon in hand, you can get up 1800cr per mission, maybe more...
- Find a spot about 1024m from the mission terminal that is a straight run (i.e. nothing to walk around or swim through)
- Scan for resources in that area - minerals, gasses, chemicals - make a note of any concentrations 65% or higher. Almost every planet will have something in high concentrations just about everywhere. Create a /waypoint.
- Now go back to the mission terminal and take two missions for that type of resource - again double click on the mission to see what it needs. Keep hitting refresh until you get 2. Also pay attention to how much the missions pay - its random, so just keep refreshing until you get the highest paying.
- Run back out, survey, repeat.
