sorry for double post:

1) Create a manufacturing schematic using items you take from a factory crate. For your convenience I suggest a mostly full one.
2) Go to your factory and take ONE item out of the crate of items you used in the schematic.
3) Put that one item and the crate it came from in the input hopper.

VOILA! The factory will extract a new item from the crate when it takes the last item in the input hopper.

I haven't confirmed this working with multiple crates (of identical serial number of course), but I suspect that it will work. You just need ONE non-crated item to start the process.

Speaking from experience:

- You can use multiple crates. For example, I have crates of 50, 50, 50 and 48 of an item in the input hopper. As long as they were all from the same batch (identical serial number) they will work fine.

- You can even have loose items that you pulled from those crates in there as well - again identical serial is the only important thing.

Equipment factories seem to work fine, structure factories on the other hand.... Having to load 1500 structure modules one by one is not fun.

Pulling from multiple crates work fine. When you do a run of micro senser suits more that 25 you find that out.
