Thread: I'd like to make 'junk', wouldn't you?

Ok maybe I need to explain a little more before you answer that.

We can make chance cubes and dice, birdcages and fireworks (and those creature things) but these dont really do much (with the possible exception of fireworks and those creature things)

On the other hand I occasionally loot broken datapad and viewscreens and I found myself thinking along these lines....

Wouldnt it be cool if artisans could make datapads and viewscreens, these could be used to decorate a building as well as to record and display messages

I have visions of a viewscreen in my shop telling customers important info, or handing a friend a datapad with a message on it (perhaps a single waypoint capacity) telling him where something can be found.

While I realise these dont 'do' anything either, to my mind they are more fun and 'cool' (and Star Warsy) than simply emailing my friend a waypoint telling him where to go or putting and item on my shop called 'read me' or dropping an item in my house with its name changed to be the text I want people to read.

Does anyone else agree that this kind of thing would be cool (and more useful than dice, chance cubes and birdcages?)

That'd be pretty cool.

I understand SWG's desire to have a market between people, so unless you sell to someone else in the game, you can't sell something. This allows prices to be set according to market forces.

BUT -- this does make it so some items are never really used in the game..unless they have decorative or roleplay purposes. Heck, can you even USE the dice?

Why isn't there a secondary NPC market things can go to? Some price based on the quality of the item and the amount of resources going into it at the time it was made. There are some items it just makes no sense to craft, given that no one will buy them. This spawns grinding more than anything else. Only the most saleable items will be generally sold, and many will be entirely ignored. I think half the things I can craft, I have no reason to because no one would buy them...especially in my out of the way player city.

Or else just let junk dealers buy things you can create for a bit of a loss, if you get stuck with items you just can't sell, rather than having to destroy them.

"Heck, can you even USE the dice?"

Yes! I was travelling with a hunting group awhile back. Every time we stopped for healing/made camp they would whip out the chance cube and place bets on what color it would come up (it sends an area message stating the color * the other dice do they same for the number that's rolled). So yes, some people actually do use them. I'm surprised no one has taken to using them in cantinas for gambling.

I'm not suggesting that player made 'junk' is sellable to the junkdealer (when they are working) I still agree that only true junk (broken items) are sellable to the junk dealer

There isnt really an argument for even sellign player junk at a loss (because if you only made it for the xp you should have used practice mode)

However it would be nice to allow artisans to repair broken junk thats found as loot in addition to making it - I like the flavour that the junk brings to the game (on the rare occasions I find it) but its a shame that the junk doesnt have any 'point' to it - at least if players could construct 'junk' such as datapads and these items had some kind of functional use (displaying messages etc) then looted broken junk would have some kind of context even if it wasnt repairable.

Hey, I'm all for being able to fix broken junk! Maybe that broken datapad has a message stored on it that would lead you on a quest.

Some friends and I had a running joke of when the first D&D group would log on and use the dice to play D&D game in game!

As for the topic of this thread, ANY item in game should be craftable. If you want it rare, makethe schematicsa quest item. I know that this has been debated before but I think it would be great!

I wish we could make a repair tool that would allow us to fix the broken items. Wouldn't it be cool to have a pair of binoculars that worked?

fixing junk! i love it.

i have a few cameras, it would be good to be able to fix it up and maybe get some screen shot style pictures u can hang on your wall. or maybe it couls actually have pre taken pictures in it. like a lost roll of film.

and yeah the broken data pad thing, thats great, imagine getting a master artizan or less (?) to fix it up for a small fee and then you open a hidden quest waypoint. to .... i dunno but maybe the start or continuation of your jedi quests? maybe thats going to far but the principals great. i get bored of going to the mission terminals. they could be less money oriented (i never read what the story is as im just after the cash most of the time.) it would be good if you had to do a set of tasks for the mission. like find an other piece of specific junk, take it to this guy. then teach some one in this and free these people from a pack of womp rats. rather than just single objective missions.

what i mean is bigger cross planetary missions that would take a while.

Also on the fixing stuff idea, these items could then me sold and used by other players. but not anything that can be created. as that could upset things. but a pair of macronoculas, or the camera. also i want to be able to catch those blue frogs on naboo and put one of those in a tank. pets in cages. or a birdy in the nemodian bird cage.

i think ive said enough for now.
