Well, if you've gotten by this long with the minimum range, I guess the answer is that Survey I - IV won't do you any good. Personally, I stick with the 192m range of Survey III, that makes it easier to followa resource vein without excessively draining my mind. By the time I hit the waypoint on the edge of the range, I'm usually back to normal.

You also get better sampling results at Survey I and III, although since you're likely using harvesters, this only matters by reducing the chance of getting for a sample to check stats and have to try a few times to get past "no sample found".

The biggest range jump occurs between Surv 3 and 4 - 2 full jumps - so if you drop Surv 4 might as well go ahead and drop 3 then, or drop it all if you really need the points.

After I train to Master Artisan to scrath it off the list (and while I grind Architect), I want to drop what I don't need (4,x,x,x) skills - my question is since I will be harvesting resources a for a while, and need Surveying skill, how much difference does it make having Surveying I - IV? Keep III?

Does your range increase - I have not noticed any difference from Novice Artisan to Survey IV ...

Yes it does but you have to increase it manualy on your survey device, it doesn't do it automaticly.
