I seem to remember there not being any real improvement in range till survey IV. If you have the max range selected on the tool then I think this could quite possibly be right. I don't think the actual quality of the tool really effects anything in surveying but I could be wrong.

I don't really care about range too much these days, when I'm searching for a good spot I'll climb on my speeder, overshoot the last waypoint, get off, survey once and get back on. The only time range would matter is when I'm close to the center. Of course, having to drop some survey skills means it's just as well I can manage without as much range...

Range only really becomes super useful when looking for the resource int he first place though. You have to cover lest ground to find the fringe of a source with survey IV. That in its self was a huge time saver for me.

Ok now havent been around for a bit, so something might have changed or there might be something I just dont know about. I looked through the artisan sticky threads and couldnt find an answer...so i come to you folks. To make a long story short, I have survey 3, the range for that should be about 190M however I am consistently getting in the 130-135M range. I am using a survey tool made with basically griding quality materials. What gives here? Is it my survey device? Is it a bug? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Have you manually changed the range on the Survey device lately?
Go to you inventory, click on the survey device and wait for the radial menu to load. One of the options there (can't remember which one) will allow you to change the range on the device.
If you have been using the device since Novice, you will probably find it's still sitting on the Novice range.

Thanks guys for your help....
1. I am about 99.9% that i have set my tool to the 192 range. I am almost certain of it. But i will check it this evening.
2. I also use the overshooting method as well. I just wish i had a largeer range to go by.
