Excuse the newbie question, but what's the difference between using a generic crafting device and a specialized one (ie, droid, weapon, general device)?

The generic crafter let's you build anything that you have schematics for but turns out generic items. The specialized crafting devices are meant to be used in connection with the public crafting devices in the cities to allow experimentation and improvement over the "generic" product. You can't use the crafting stations with the generic crafting tool.
