I'm almost Master Artisan, few more days and I should be there. I have no combat skills at all. I'm not interested in being an uber combat type but just enough to be able to defend myself etc.

What is a good combat profession that will complement an Artisan?

Fencer! With master fencer you are so hard to hit that you can generally beat anything - if not then you will be able to gte away before you are killed.

Don't be a TK clone - go blademaster!

I have found that either TKA or Rifleman are great for soloing PvE. I don't care much for PvP but I understand that either of those are good for that as well. All things being equal, I preferred TKA because it was more challenging. As a master Rifleman, I am unable to get missions that are challenging by myself... it's great for making money, but I tended to enjoy running missions as TK more then I do as a rifleman

Any of them. If you are not going full combat and just need to be able to defend yourself than anything will do. Fool around with a few different types and go with the one that best suits your playstyle.

If you are not going to master an elite combat class, I would recommend Pistoleer.

Ranged is more useful than mele in a lot of situations, like when you are running away. You are likely to find yourself running away a lot working harvesters in tough areas. Once burst run has left you tired, your only chance is to kill your persuer before he catches you.

Pistol's are much better at close range than rifles or carbines, and once you are attacked by an animal that is where you will be fighting.

As you go up the elite tree, rifles look better and better, at Master they are better than Pistols.
