I know instant sales are capped at 6k, but is there a cap on auctions?
If there is, isn't that in direct conflict with the entire concept of an "auction?"

There is a cap on the price of auctions, 6k, just as there are on instant sales.
Auctions are mostly used to put things up for 6000 credits, whereas no one can bid higher that that, the item will be un buyable, and works good for advertisement. Auctions can also be of use if you have something very, very cheap you want to sell, and you want as much as possible from the sale. Seeing how the gain is max 5998 credits though, this is most used of newbies who want to pinch every penny
