Thread: Some question about resource shifting/spawning

I feel like I should know this, but I'm hoping someone can answer these for me:

1) Is there a finite number of specifically named resources already made up that we just rotate through, or are resources randomly generated as we go?

2) If it's a set list, do the stats change at all, or can I expect to find some more "Macowato" ore in a few weeks or months that looks just like what I've got now.

3) Is the order and variety of appearance similar on all galaxies, or would it bepossible for one server to not have any copper (for example) fordays while another server has 5 different kinds (like Gorath had recently).

Thanks for any clarification to these questions or any other bits of info you can offer about the semi-mysterious process of resource shifting.

It's a little early to be sure, but it looks like resources have set stats on them (at least in that galaxy). I don't know if there is a fixed list of resource names, but types seems to be at least partially fixed as certain types are required for certain schematics. This doesn't mean those types will always be available, but they should be recurring. Resources will vary depending on the galaxy you're playing on.

Unless I totally missed something there is not a specific set of stats for each particular resource. I have seen two types of both Nabooian Insect Meat and Nabooian Avian Meat. At least that's what I think I saw. I double checked it, but I suppose it's possible I missed something.

Ok, ALL resources (bones, water, sunlight, ores, everything) are recycled every 5-8 days (not all at once, of course). The types stay mostly the same (eg. Corellian Herbivore Meat, Link-Steel Aluminum, Armophous Crystalline Gemstones) although not all types will be available in all galaxies/planets at all times. However, each resource, when recycled, gets a new randomly generated name and new stats. When recycled, the old resource will NEVER APPEAR AGAIN, EVER.

I want to clarify what I said earlier. When I said it looks like resources have set stats I meant by name not type. For example Ipeira and Asoakesite are both Doonium Iron, but they don't have the same stats. However, I believe that anytime (if ever again) a resource called Ipeira pops up it will be Doonium Iron and have the same stats that it did previously. Like I said though, it's too early to say if this is true or not because we haven't cycled through all the reosources, if that's even possible.

I'm starting to wonder if it is finite. It's too early in the game to tell. I wonder if there aren't fixed classes (e.g. platinite copper), but individual types are generated at random. My theory (and it is only a theory) is they programmed the game to constantly generate new metals with unique properties, then spread them out randomly as well. Certain classes are programmed to be more rare.

2) If it's a set list, do the stats change at all, or can I expect to find some more "Macowato" ore in a few weeks or months that looks just like what I've got now.

We are going into our fourth rotation of minerals and petros on Bloodfin. I can't recall seeing a single repeat so far.

3) Is the order and variety of appearance similar on all galaxies, or would it bepossible for one server to not have any copper (for example) fordays while another server has 5 different kinds (like Gorath had recently).

From reading the forums so far, I think each server is generating its own unique set. That's what causes me to theorize that resources are generated by the gaming engine. Hard for me to believe there is someone managing that item by item at SOE. I think everyone gets a complement of all the resources on their pattern. Some early posts I saw also seemed to indicate that different servers operate on different rotation schedules.

Thanks for any clarification to these questions or any other bits of info you can offer about the semi-mysterious process of resource shifting.

I've been looking at the resource lists on swgcraft and swg resource center. There are a freaking TON of resources listed there, and none of the names appear to duplicate across servers. I was confused because a friend had told me he had seen duplicates listed but now we can't find any, so I'm going to assume he was high at the time

I hope their algorithms at least make sure that there is generally available resources of a certain quality at least. Otherwise the market is never going to stabilize. When you don't have a semi-reliable source of materials for making quality items, yo uend up with similar effects to not having rule of law, which in the end is what led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Not to draw too grand a comparison, but business owners need some sense of stability or they can't run a reliable business.

It seems to me that if there isnt a finite number of different types of resources that Sony is really going to get into a huge database crunch.

Each time a resources changes its name or stats, there has to be a record of it. Theoreticly the very first resource every collected on a server could still be around stored in someones house or bank three years after the game started. That is 1000s upon 1000s of different resources that they would have to keep track of. I can't think that this will work.

I am of the theory that there are a finite number of say Link Steel Aluminimum varitions (say like 10) that cycle through on a random cycle. I can't see how anything else would be manageable serverside.

I know that I have seen duplicated names across the servers on swgcraft and I'm fairly certain that I have seen duplicate names across servers while surveying in game.

Well this would certainly make sense to me, but the numbers are already too many for me to look through all of them I know on Gorath we currently have something called "Tri" and a friend says he's seen that before during a different cycle. But I can also easily imagine that a simple name like that could come up multiple times in a random generator using specific naming rules.

But this would also lead to the problem Taragin cites. So, I guess we'll assume they've already generated a random, static list to draw from, and just wait to see if it bears out. Thanks for the thoughts, folks.
