I was wondering what the success of crafting in general and experimentation was based on? Is it just your experience level or do abilities (higher mind, better chanceetc) play into it at all?

I think the quality of resources has a big part in it. For example, I try to build a CDEF gun using low-quality steel (like 440/1000 quality) and some chemicals. Crafting screen says it was a moderate success. I try again using 809/1000 quality steel and chemicals and the crafting screen says it was a great success.

That's my experience in-game anyway.

Quality of crafting tool. (some people debate this)

Quality of resources is major. Whatever the schematic says matters (might be OQ, might be flavor and potency.

Number of experimentations points.

It might vary for profession/schematic (some things are bugged, somethings incomplete)
