Alright, I just hit Engineering 4 and am starting to build up the 33k experience to get a second tier profession, and I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of each profession. Any information would be useful (personal favorites, what makes the most money, what uses the most materials, how frustrating crit failures are, where experimentation has the most effect right now, etc.)

Architect:

Sells at the worst markup (you can sometimes sell the resources going into the product for more).

Uses the most materials by far.

Has the most frustrating crit failures by far. (Try failing something 10,000 resources in it let alone 50,000+ resources).

Experimentation has a negligible/nill effect. (Which is good when you are advancing and trying to sell your stuff and bad when you are on the top).

Very limited market (most people want a weapon and armor. You can get by entirely without a house unless you want to be a merchant).

Too many people playing it (because their PA needed a PA hall to get going so they PLed up to master).

On the plus side it is relatively easy to advance without ending up with carpo-tunnel and there is a market for both the lower end (medium harvestors), factories, medium houses and high end stuff (PA halls - large installations).

Weapon Smith:

Huge grind at all levels. Carpo-tunnel is a serious worry. Don't play if you don't have medical insurance. If you think the grind to get to a 2nd tier profession is bad, you have seen nothing.

Uses little in the way of resources.

Sells at a very high profit margin BUT...

Your product is worthless unless at the top because the Masters can experiment the guns 6 ways to Sunday. You can't. So you haven't got a market.

Therefore, you will either need a secondary source of income, have friends that will donate ore, or be VERY patient about how fast you level up (i.e the once a month you find someone desperate enough to buy a substandard product you can go out and get a few more resources.) Rip Van Winkle will wake up before you gain a skill level.

Armor Smith:

Somebody else will have to do the talking here. I'm not knowledgeable.
